Byline: Angela M. Lemire Staff Writer

The Animal Care Foundation had no trouble deciding that it wanted to give the gift of life to more than 60 homeless dogs and cats at Castaic Animal Shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.

to adopt dogs would total $51.89, which includes vaccinations and licensing. For cats, remaining fees would total $29.06.

``This could reduce fees by as much as $40 in some cases,'' Eversull said. ``We're hoping the program is successful and we place a lot of pets in good homes this year.''

The Animal Care Foundation has helped place numerous homeless pets around the holidays by sponsoring spay and neuter assistance programs, he said.

, Eversull said, noting that people often look to adopt puppies and kittens. Most animals at the Castaic Animal Shelter are adults, he said.

``Many families want to raise it just like they would any member of the family and train it themselves, from when they're very young. But there's other benefits from adopting adult dogs,'' Eversull said. ``For one thing, you usually don't have to worry about house-training them.''

Eversull encouraged both gift givers and recipients to make informed and carefully considered decisions before adopting dogs or cats, because keeping pets requires much time, care and responsibility.
