ANGELS WALK OFF WITH ANOTHER DEFEAT WHITE SOX 5, ANGELS 4.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

CHICAGO - Brendan Donnelly Brendan Kevin Donnelly (b. July 4, 1971 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.

Donnelly had bounced around the minor leagues for 10 seasons after he was drafted in 1992 by the Chicago White Sox before he finally made his

Most commonly, it occurs the morning after a night out at a bar or a dance club or a party.  Angels bullpen mate Scot Shields Scot Shields (b. But to blame Donnelly for Tuesday's loss, sealed when Jermaine Dye Jermaine Terrell Dye (born January 28, 1974 in Vacaville, California) is a right fielder in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox. Were it not for the incessant failings of reliever Esteban Yan Esteban Luis Yan (born on June 22, 1975 in CampiƱa del Seibo, Dominican Republic) is a starting pitcher for the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball's Central League. At 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m), 255 lb (116 kg), he bats and throws right handed. , who has a 5.40 ERA and in whom the Angels seem to have virtually no confidence, Donnelly wouldn't have been forced to work two innings in a 4-4 game.

Were it not for a somewhat routine Carl Everett Carl Edward Everett III (born June 3, 1971 in Tampa, Florida) is a former all-star Major League Baseball outfielder.  Chone Figgins misplayed into a ground-rule double in the fourth inning, starter John Lackey might have completed his seven-inning stint with the lead.

And if not for an offense that failed to exploit the early departure of White Sox starter Freddy Garcia, who left in the sixth inning with a hamstring injury hamstring injury Sports medicine A muscle injury of biceps femoris, seen in sprinters and runners, when a contracted muscle meets a lengthening force, overpowering intrinsic muscle resiliency Management RICE, NSAIDs, gradual ↑ of pain-free activity–eg, , the Angels wouldn't have had to try and survive a ninth inning against a deep Chicago club in its home ballpark.

Instead, the Angels slipped quietly into second place for the first time this season and started a two-week, 12-game trip in about the worst manner possible.

Two games, two ninth-inning losses, too many shoddy areas to shore up.

``It's uncharacteristic of us,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``We shot ourselves in the foot a little bit tonight. We're close.''

But close won't cut it in a season series with the Sox that's been remarkably taut. Four of the six games between the two playoff contenders have been decided by one run.

The decisive run Tuesday left the yard in rapid-fire fashion.

``If it had hit the wall,'' Donnelly mused, ``the wall might have fallen down. Hit the ball just high enough to end the game. He crushed it.''

It was Donnelly's seventh multi-inning appearance this season, and statistically, he isn't nearly as effective in the second inning of work. But Yan, signed to a two-year contract and expected to be at least a peer, if not the equal, of Donnelly and Shields in the set-up role, has been awful.

In response to Yan's struggles, the Angels sent long reliever Chris Bootcheck (0.00 ERA) to the minor leagues so that 29-year-old rookie Joel Peralta, a former infielder, can get a shot in a later-inning role Yan might have assumed.

Tuesday, a lack of depth put Donnelly on the high wire. He got through the Sox's 3-4-5 hitters on seven pitches, but not their sixth.

``He's terrific in first-hitter efficiency,'' Scioscia said. ``He hasn't been as effective in the second, as a rule.''

Figgins, making his second start in three days in right field, probably is more comfortable in center. But Scioscia said he still should have caught Everett's towering flyball, into a swirling wind, that landed for a ground-rule double in the fourth.

Everett scored on a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 Chicago lead.

``Figgy drifted on that ball, and it turned out to be a big run,'' Scioscia said. ``He broke a cardinal rule of outfield. You run to a spot hard in case the ball carries farther. It's something he has to learn from and move on.''

Lackey wasn't spectacular Tuesday, giving up 10 hits and a solo home run to Joe Crede in the sixth and leaving with a 4-3 deficit. Garret Anderson, who homered and had three hits, tied it in the eighth with an RBI RBI

Donnelly ended it, getting tagged with the loss, if not the blame, as the Angels tumbled from the top of the AL West standings.

``Ah, man, what is it, June tomorrow?'' Lackey asked. ``We've got a long way to go to start worrying about (pennant) races.''
