ANGELS TAKE NO CHANCES IN VICTORY : ANGELS 9, DETROIT 4.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

One indication things are going really well for the Angels: Team superstitions have returned.

Last month, a relief pitcher relief pitcher

The body of a tarantula may be as much as 3 in. (7.  into the bullpen. The team promptly went on a five-game losing streak, and the arachnid arachnid (ərăk`nĭd), mainly terrestrial arthropod of the class Arachnida, including the spider, scorpion, mite and tick, harvestman (daddy longlegs), and a few minor groups.  quickly disappeared.

Spiders have given way to playing really loud music before a game. It doesn't matter what the song or style is, just as long as it's deafening.

Who can argue with success? The Angels won their 10th straight game Thursday, 9-4 against Detroit, moving them to within a half-game of first-place Seattle. The streak, best in the majors so far this season, matched that of 1979, the year of the team's first American First American may refer to:

``It's been a good run,'' manager Terry Collins said. ``Hope it continues.''

Although it's only July, it keeps getting better.

    Tony Phillips
Keith Anthony ("Tony") Phillips (b. April 25, 1959 in Atlanta, Georgia) is a former Major League Baseball utility player who had an 18 year career from 1982 to 1999. He played first base, second base, shortstop, third base, outfielder and designated hitter.

Recently recalled catcher Todd Greene, whose two-homer game Wednesday earned him a spot in Thursday's lineup as the designated hitter, stole his first base of the season. He finished with three hits and three runs scored, both career highs, and an RBI.

      ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what the hell I'm going to do (today),'' Collins said.

``Fortunately for me, I don't have to make that choice,'' Greene said. ``For him, it's a good problem to have.''

Dennis Springer (5-3) won for the first time since June 8 and didn't walk anyone for the first time this season. It was the third straight game an Angels starter went walk-free.

Darrell May, making his first appearance since May 13 (he was sent down to Triple-A Vancouver on May 16 before being recalled July 10), pitched the final two innings and struck out a career-best four.

And the news gets better. The Angels aren't going to see Roger Clemens or Pat Hentgen and their combined 23-10 record when Toronto comes to town for this weekend. Instead, the Angels will face Woody Williams, Robert Pearson and Luis Andujar, who have a combined record of 7-18.

Can you say 13-game win streak and first place?

``I want to ride it out,'' Phillips said. ``You don't evaluate it. You ride it out. We're doing everything right.''

Phillips entered the game hitting .182 with two RBI on the homestand before homering against Felipe Lira (5-7) to lead off the first inning. It was Phillips' third leadoff home run this season.

Phillips also collected RBI singles in the second and fourth innings and hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Springer, meanwhile, had his knuckleball dancing just enough to go seven innings and strike out five.
