ANGELS SNAP STREAK IN LOSS TO RANGERS : TEXAS 9, ANGELS 1.
Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer
If Chuck Finley Charles Edward Finley (Born:November 26 1962 in Monroe, Louisiana) is a former left-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played for the California Angels (later the Anaheim Angels) from 1986 to 1999 and the Cleveland Indians and St. wants to help the Angels by agreeing to a trade so
they can acquire prospects, he's going about it the wrong way.
Finley (4-8) got ripped for nine runs in 4-1/3 innings by the Texas
Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans. , who humbled the previously hot Angels 9-1 before 20,539 at
Edison Field on Monday night. The AL West-leading Rangers increased
their lead over the last-place Angels to 7-1/2 games.
The Angels, who entered the game having won six of seven, had their
winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies" snapped at four. Rangers starter Mike Morgan - For details on the British actor/cinematographer, see Mike Morgan (actor).
Michael Thomas Morgan (born October 8 1959 in Tulare, California) is a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who competed for twelve different teams from , who had not
pitched more than seven innings in a game all season, was one out away
from his first shutout in six years before Todd Greene Todd Anthony Greene (born May 8, 1971 in Augusta, Georgia) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who is currently a free agent. He previously played for the Anaheim Angels (1996-2000), Toronto Blue Jays (2000), New York Yankees (2001), Texas Rangers 2002-2003) and the Colorado homered. Morgan
(9-5) pounded his fist into his glove after watching the ball sail over
the fence, but got the final out on the next pitch and get the complete
game.
Juan Gonzalez, Royce Clayton Royce Spencer Clayton (born January 2 1970 in Burbank, California) is a major league shortstop. He was drafted in the first round (15th pick overall) of the 1988 amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants, and made his major league debut for the Giants on September 9, 1991. and Rafael Palmeiro Rafael Palmeiro Corrales (born September 24, 1964 in Havana, Cuba) is a Major League Baseball player with a career spanning 20 years, 1986 to 2005. Though technically not retired, Palmeiro has not played since . smacked home runs
off Finley and continued a trend the Angels lefty can't seem to
shake. Even though Finley beat the Rangers on April 9 this season, his
career mark against the Rangers fell to 8-17.
It was a little more than a week ago that Finley said he'd
consider accepting a trade to a contender if the Angels were out of the
race and it would help the Angels obtain young and talented players in
return. And besides, Finley could always return to Anaheim next season
as a free agent because his contract expires at the end of this year.
But if Finley wants the Angels to get something significant in
return, he ought to start pitching better. He hasn't won in his
past five starts, going 0-3 (two no-decisions) with a 6.35 ERA in those
games.
However, any trade talk had been quieted lately because the Angels
had been playing well.
``A week ago we were 10 games out and our gravestones were being
etched,'' Angels manager Terry Collins said before the game.
``Now we're 6-1/2 out and they're saying if we sweep
we're back in it. If we hang in there we'll be OK.''
The best the Angels can hope for now is to win two of three, and
the Rangers made sure of it early in Monday's game.
Gonzalez hit his 22nd homer of the season in the first inning,
driving in Ivan Rodriguez ahead of him for a 2-0 lead.
Finley struggled with his control in the fourth. With one out and
Gonzalez on first base, Finley walked Todd Zeile Todd Edward Zeile (born September 9, 1965 in Van Nuys, California) is a former third baseman and first baseman in Major League Baseball who played from 1989 to 2004. and Roberto Kelly Roberto Conrado (Gray) Kelly (born October 1, 1964 in Panama City, Panama) is a former Outfielder in Major League Baseball. He was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1982 and went on to play for the New York Yankees (1987-92 and 2000), Cincinnati Reds to
load the bases for ex-Angel Lee Stevens. Stevens lined a two-run single
to center and Clayton followed with a three-run homer and suddenly it
was 7-0.
Gonzalez got his third hit of the game - a single - with one out in
the fifth, and Palmeiro followed with a shot over the fence in right,
his 20th homer of the year for a 9-0 Rangers lead.
It marked the ninth consecutive season that Palmeiro has hit 20 or
more homers.
