Instead, Bartolo Colon stayed in the Angels' clubhouse, contemplating how to shut down a Red Sox team that is ranked No. 1 in the American League in eight offensive categories.

Colon's introspection produced a one-word answer: fastball.

Colon further enhanced his Cy Young Award chances by improving to 16-6 with six overpowering innings and one bad one in the opener of a big four-game series, a Angels' 13-4 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 44,050 at Angel Stadium.

The Angels' offense broke out for 15 hits - four by Juan Rivera, who had two home runs and six RBI RBI

. Bengie Molina and Casey Kotchman each had three hits. A productive evening for a struggling offense, but overkill overkill Vox populi An excess of anything  on this night.

Colon shut out the Red Sox on three hits through six innings, allowing only one Red Sox baserunner into scoring position. In the seventh, the Red Sox had five hits off him, including four in a row with two outs to push three runs home.

Colon estimated that of his 104 pitches, he threw 90 fastballs, which he felt would work for him on this night.

``Before the game, I was playing long toss with (catcher) Bengie (Molina), and the ball felt really small coming out of my hand,'' Colon said through an interpreter. ``It told me I was going to throw the fastball a lot. I carried it to the bullpen, and then into the game.''

Colon had only five strikeouts, but four of them came against Ortiz (two) and Ramirez (two).

``I would prefer minimizing pitches against them, have them swing at the first pitch and make an out,'' Colon said. ``Fortunately, I had life on my fastball, and everything worked out. Manny Ramirez is my brother, and David Ortiz is one of the best human beings on earth right now.''

Colon usually needs a few innings to work into his velocity, but he hit 97 mph in the first inning when he struck out Ortiz. He hit 97 again in the second striking out Ramirez.

``He took about as much time as it takes from his last pitch in the bullpen to the first pitch of the game to work into his velocity,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``It was the best fastball we've seen from Bart all year.

``He turns his fastball into three different looks, and he creates zones for himself. And he did it against probably the best offense in our league.''

Colon has come on strong the past month, going 5-0 with a 2.93 ERA in his past six starts. With 16 wins, he is on pace for 21, which would make him the first Angels pitcher with 20 wins in a season since Nolan Ryan won 22 in 1974. Colon figures to get eight more starts during the regular season.

Colon prefers not to talk about a possible Cy Young Award, but he has Scioscia's vote.

``You talk about candidates for Cy Young, and Bartolo Colon has to be right in that mix,'' Scioscia said.

The Angels knocked Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield (12-10) out of the game - literally - during a six-run fifth inning, which matched the Angels' biggest inning of the season.

Kotchman, who started at designated hitter and homered off Wakefield in the second inning, hit a line drive off Wakefield's right ankle. It went as an RBI single and sent Wakefield limping to the dugout. X-rays were negative, but Wakefield has a deep contusion CONTUSION, med. jurisp. The Red Sox said it was too early to know if he would make his next start.
