ANGELS RALLY CAN'T CATCH THE MARLINS LEITER SHOWS SANTANA WHO'S HIS DADDY FLORIDA 7, ANGELS 5.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Al Leiter
Alois Terry "Al" Leiter [lighter] (born October 23, 1965 in Toms River, New Jersey), is a retired Major League Baseball left-handed starting pitcher. He attended Central Regional High School.
is almost old enough to be Ervin Santana's father, so maybe it was appropriate that the 39-year-old left-hander taught the 22-year-old rookie a lesson on Father's Day.

At times, Leiter looked as though he could use assistance just getting back to the dugout after each inning, but it was he who withstood the warm afternoon sun, outlasting Santana and the Angels and pitching the Florida Marlins The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami Gardens, Florida. Despite the loss, the Angels maintained their 1 1/2-game lead over Texas in the AL West going into tonight's series opener against the Rangers.

Leiter (3-6) worked out of some early jams and completed six innings, allowing two runs and five hits. The Marlins seemed on their way to an easy victory, leading 7-2 going into the eighth inning, but the Angels nearly rallied against the Marlins' beleaguered be·lea·guer

The Angels batted around in the eighth, getting five hits and a walk for three runs. The Marlins escaped when former Dodger Guillermo Mota Guillermo Reynoso Mota (born July 25, 1973 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher who is currently on the New York Mets.  got Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  to fly out to center with the bases loaded to end the threat and allow Florida to salvage one game of the three-game series.

Santana (1-2) barely broke a sweat before getting the hook after 2 2/3 innings, the worst of his four major-league starts but not unlike his debut on May 17 when he allowed six runs in four innings against the Cleveland Indians Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled due to vandalism. . Santana, who was 4 years old when Leiter made his major- league debut in 1987, gave up seven runs and eight hits Sunday.

``He just didn't have it today,'' Angels catcher Bengie Molina said. ``He didn't locate his fastball and even his off-speed pitches were kind of high. He's pretty good at calming down and keeping his composure, but there's very little you can do once he's out there and has the ball. It's up to him to make pitches.''

Similar to his first start when he gave up the cycle (single, double, triple, home run) to the first four Indians batters he faced, Santana's troubles were evident immediately.

Juan Pierre opened with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. One out later, Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Delgado singled, Mike Lowell walked, Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. That was good for four first-inning runs, a lead that was increased to 7-0 on Conine's three-run homer in the third.
