ANGELS PITCHING VAUGHN TO METS.

Byline: -Joe Haakenson

ANAHEIM - Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.

The two sides have traded proposals, with one scenario sending first baseman Todd Zeile and a starting pitcher - either Steve Trachsel, Glendon Rusch or Bruce Chen - to the Angels. Pitcher Kevin Appier also remains an option.

The Mets want to see Vaughn work out first. Vaughn, who is spending the winter in the Boston area, is 34 and missed the 2001 season after surgery to repair a ruptured biceps tendon. They also are concerned about his weight, which is around 270 pounds, though those close to him say Vaughn is in good shape and eager to come back strong in 2002.

The Angels have been actively searching for a team to take Vaughn, who irked many in the organization with comments he made to a Boston radio station recently about returning to the Red Sox. The Angels would like to oblige him with a trade, especially considering he is owed $48 million over the next three years, plus a $2 million buyout option for 2005.

The Mets probably would want the Angels to pick up part of the money, most likely $8 million of his $13 million signing bonus, which was deferred until 2003.
