ANGELS PITCH IN FOR A VICTORY BULLPEN BAILS OUT WASHBURN ANGELS 6, OAKLAND 3.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game  hasn't even sniffed the seventh inning this season, but when a pitcher has the Angels' relievers behind him, it doesn't seem to matter much.

Washburn still hasn't lasted six innings in a game this season, and his ERA is a bloated 6.89. But with a little help from his friends in the bullpen and a couple home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Vladimir Alvino Guerrero (born February 9, 1976 in Don Gregorio, Nizao, Dominican Republic), and known in his native Dominican Republic as Miquéas (Spanish for Micah), is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  and Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005). , the Angels had a tidy 6-3 victory over the Oakland A's on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 43,487 at Angel Stadium.

Washburn held the A's to two runs and six hits, but he lasted only five innings, needing 107 pitches to get that far. In his other two starts this season, Washburn lasted 5 1/3 innings. Still, the Angels are 2-1 in games he has started.

On Saturday, a big reason was the work of three relievers, who combined to pitch the final four innings. Scot Shields Scot Shields (b. Rodriguez faced four batters and struck out all four, leaving the ninth inning to Troy Percival Troy Eugene Percival (born August 9, 1969 in Fontana, California) is a Major League Baseball reliever on the St. Louis Cardinals. Percival came out of retirement on June 8, 2007 when he signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals[1]. , who struggled with his control. Percival gave up a solo home run to Billy McMillon but managed to close it out.

Despite not reaching the sixth inning, Washburn found a way to make big pitches in key situations. The biggest came in the fifth when Erubial Durazo came to the plate with the bases loaded, two outs and the Angels leading 4-2. Washburn struck out Durazo on three sliders sliders

.

``He used to hit me well because back then I didn't have a breaking ball,'' Washburn said. ``I threw all fastballs.''

Washburn didn't last as long as his counterpart, A's starter Mark Mulder Mark Alan Mulder (born August 5, 1977 in South Holland, Illinois) is a left-handed starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball. After playing for Michigan State University, Mulder was selected by the Oakland Athletics with the second overall pick in the , who went seven innings. But it was Washburn who wound up with a victory.

``It's fun to beat the best, and those three (Mulder, Tim Hudson Timothy Adam Hudson (born July 14, 1975 in Salem, Alabama[1] ) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the Atlanta Braves. Hudson began his major league career with the Oakland Athletics (1999-2004) and played his last two years of college  and Barry Zito) are three of the best in the game,'' Washburn said. ``I thought I pitched really well. I made good pitches when I had to. I'm not happy with five innings, but nobody comes back on our bullpen very often.''

Mulder was hurt by his defense early in the game, including an error of his own, and it set the tone for the rest of the night.

The A's scored a run off Washburn in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Durazo was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, went to second on a single by Damien Miller and scored on a single by Marco Scutaro.

But the A's lead lasted only until the Angels scored two runs in the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

Garret Anderson led off the inning with a grounder to first baseman Eric Karros, who flipped to Mulder covering first. Mulder, though, missed the bag with his foot and was charged with an error.

A walk to Glaus and a single by Jose Guillen loaded the bases for Tim Salmon, who flied out to shallow right field.

Bengie Molina followed with a chopper to third baseman Eric Chavez, and Mulder appeared to be getting the double-play ball he needed to get out of the inning. But Chavez's throw home to force Anderson was wild and went to the backstop. Anderson and Glaus both scored to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.
