Manager Marcel Lachemann Marcel Ernest Lachemann (born June 13, 1941 in Los Angeles, California) is a baseball pitching coach and a former relief pitcher for the Oakland Athletics.

After a three-year stint (1969 - 1971 in the majors, he became the pitching coach for the California Angels in 1984.
, however, was coy about his plans. It won't necessarily be a straight, left-right deal, he indicated.

It since has become obvious that Lachemann leans heavily toward Wallach, the former Dodger, who started against a right-handed pitcher Sunday evening (ex-L.A. teammate Orel Hershiser) for the third time in the past five games.

``It'll depend on matchups, streaks, whatever the manager feels like,'' Lachemann said.

Wallach, the Angels' leading hitter Sunday with a 2-for-4 night, raised his batting average to .304 - he is hitting .344 over his past nine games. Howell is at .256.

Sleight of knee: The Angels participated in a rare event in the first inning - the Indians' Kenny Lofton caught stealing third. But the play was wrapped in controversy.

Lofton, the major leagues' stolen-base leader with 26, was 7 for 7 on previous attempts at third. He was ruled out on a delayed call by ump Ken Kaiser after Wallach appeared to nudge him off the bag with his left knee.

Lofton and manager Mike Hargrove argued vehemently. To no avail.

: Lofton was the object of controversy again in the fifth inning when second-base ump Joe Brinkman made a horrible call.

Lofton caught the leadoff pop of Jorge Fabregas, and took four steps with the ball firmly in his glove. Then, while transferring the ball to his throwing hand, he dropped it on the turf, and Brinkman ruled no catch.

Fortunately, the one-base error did not bear on the scoring, as Hershiser pitched out of the jam.

Rotation reprieve: Because of four off days over the next three weeks (including today), the Angels will have to use a No. 5 starter only twice between now and the end of the month. Now the muddle: Who is considered the lesser drag on the rotation, Dennis Springer (0-0, 16.88) or Scott Sanderson (0-2, 7.47, 34 hits in 15-2/3 innings)?
