ANGELS NOTEBOOK: WITH VAUGHN OUT, WHO'S ON FIRST?

Byline: Joe Haakenson

Mo Vaughn's tumble into the Cleveland Indians' dugout dugout: see canoe. Tuesday left the Angels' $80-million first baseman limping on a sprained left ankle, forcing some shifts in the Angels lineup.

Darin Erstad, who did not play a single inning at first base during spring training, started Wednesday night in Vaughn's place.

Orlando Palmeiro gave up his seat on the bench to play Erstad's spot in left field and bat leadoff. Erstad last played first base during the final week of last season against the Texas Rangers.

Railing removed: The Indians offered no help for Vaughn as he approached the top of the dugout steps. He never looked down to see where he was for fear of losing sight of the ball.

``I don't blame anybody in that situation,'' Vaughn said. ``It's my responsibility to take care of myself.

When Anaheim Stadium was renovated and became Edison Field in 1997, the dugouts initially had railing about three feet high with netting, separating the playing field from the dugout. But manager Terry Collins asked that the railing be removed because ``I didn't like 'em. But I never felt we were going to have an $80 million first baseman either.''

Shoulder worries Edmonds Edmond, city (1990 pop. 52,315), Oklahoma co., central Okla.; settled 1889. It is a trading center with a huge oil field and small industries that manufacture concrete, petroleum products, and other goods. The city's population nearly tripled from 1970 to 1990. The Univ. of Central Oklahoma is in Edmond. South of the city in Memorial Park is the grave of Wiley Post, who died with Will Rogers in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1935.: Center fielder Jim Edmonds Edmonds, city (1990 pop. 30,744), Snohomish co., NW Wash., a residential suburb of Seattle, on Puget Sound; inc. 1890. His biggest problem now is not the strained groin, but the cyst cyst (sist)

3. a stage in the life cycle of certain parasites, during which they are enveloped in a protective wall.
buried in the muscle of his right shoulder.

Edmonds has had a sore shoulder going back to last season, but he aggravated the condition lifting weights last Saturday.

``It's kind of like if Gary (DiSarcina) didn't show up to spring training early, he'd be in the lineup right now,'' Edmonds said. ``And if I had a lazy Saturday afternoon and didn't work out, I'd be in the lineup. (Stuff) happens.''

Edmonds said it hasn't been determined if he'll have the cyst drained or will allow it to heal on its own.

ANGELS vs. CLEVELAND

Time: 7:05 p.m., at Edison Field.

TV/Radio: FSW2; KLAC-AM (570), XPRS-AM (1090).

Matchup: Angels starter Steve Sparks went 9-4 with a 4.34 ERA in 22 games last season and hit the jackpot. A career minor-leaguer except for a brief stint with the Brewers, Sparks signed a $1.35 million deal for 1999. He is one of four knuckleball pitchers active in the big leagues today. Bartolo Colon (14-9, 3.71 ERA in '98) will start for the Indians.
