ANGELS NOTEBOOK: WEAVER TO TRY FOR 10-0 START.

Byline: BEN VILLA Staff Writer

It seems that with every start he makes, the attention surrounding Angels pitcher Jered Weaver Jered David Weaver (born October 4, 1982 in Northridge, California), is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Jered attended college at Long Beach State University where he was the 2004 College Baseball's Golden Spikes Award winner.
 grows and grows.

But the rookie phenom said the only time he thinks about his undefeated streak is when others bring it up.

The former Long Beach State star will start tonight against the Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park.  and he'll try and become the first starter since Kirk Rueter to begin his career 10-0.

Rueter did it over two seasons with the Montreal Expos The Montreal Expos (French: Les Expos de MontrĂ©al) were a Major League Baseball team located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 1969 until 2004. After the 2004 season, the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Nationals.  from 1993-94, while Weaver has baffled American League American League (AL)

hitters to the tune of a 1.95 ERA in his first go around in the big leagues this year.

``You try and not think about stuff like that,'' Weaver said. ``I'm just going to go out and do the best I can. My job is to keep the team in the game and make good pitches, and if I do that, then the wins will come.''

Weaver already made history last week when he beat Seattle 3-0. In doing so, he tied the American League rookie record by opening his career 9-0. The Yankees' Whitey Ford

was the last to do it in 1950.

If Weaver wants to continue his assault on the record books tonight, however, he'll have to beat a powerful Red Sox club that features two of the premier sluggers in the game -- David Ortiz David Ortiz (born November 18, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter who has played for the Boston Red Sox since 2003. Previously, Ortiz played for the Minnesota Twins (1997-2002).  and Manny Manny may refer to:

``It's been a good ride so far and if it ends, it ends. I try not to reflect on it too much. I just go out there and pitch,'' Weaver said.

Close to automatic: One of the main reasons the Angels have the best record in baseball (32-15) since July 1 has been the play of their closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, who has 35 saves this season, has converted 20 out of his past 21 save chances and owns a 0.32 ERA in his past 28 outings.

Tuesday, he ran his scoreless streak to 18 1/3 innings after he pitched a scoreless ninth against the Red Sox in a 4-3 win.

``I feel strong and I feel good on the mound,'' Rodriguez said.

Ready for the home stretch: Before his start against the Red Sox, Angels rookie left-hander Joe Saunders had complained about his arm being fatigued.

But Saunders didn't allow an earned run and he was in line for his fifth win of the season when he left the game with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.

``I think having a day off in the schedule helped me and my whole body feels good,'' Saunders said.
