ANGELS NOTEBOOK: WASHBURN WILL MISS NEXT START.

Byline: Keven Chavez Staff Writer

SEATTLE - Angels pitcher Bartolo Colon appears to have made it through his recent injury troubles with his back and remains on schedule to make his next start on Thursday at home against Detroit.

The injury bug, however, moved down the pitching rotation to left-hander Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game , who will miss at least his next scheduled start with tendinitis tendinitis

 in his left forearm.

Washburn was on the 15-day disabled list with the injury in August and has been dealing with nagging pain for most of the season.

``It's something that only heals with rest and not pitching,'' said Washburn, who is 7-8 with a 3.35 ERA. ``I've been trying to pitch through it, but when you do that it gets worse and worse and worse and gets to the point it's very painful and intolerable.

``Hopefully with a little time off, I can be ready to help the team in last couple weeks of the season and into the playoffs.''

Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.

Saunders played college baseball at Virginia Tech, where he compiled a 27-7 career record.
or Kelvim Escobar Kelvim Jose Escobar Bolivar [ess-coe-BAR] (born April 11, 1976 in La Guaira, Venezuela) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2004-present). He bats and throws right handed.  will start in Washburn's place on Wednesday.

Washburn gave up five runs in five innings last Friday in Chicago. He said that before his August stint on the DL, he talked the coaching staff into letting him pitch through the pain and his performance suffered.

``I want to help the team but I can't go out there and jeopardize jeop·ard·ize

my career at the same time,'' said Washburn, who is a free agent at the end of the season. ``Last time I went out there (before going on the DL) I wasn't as sharp and I wasn't able to help the team the way I can when I'm healthy.''

Escobar has pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief since returning from the DL last week. Scioscia said he would remain available out of the bullpen on Monday and today.

``If he's not used the next two days he's obviously a candidate for Wednesday, but you have to weigh what's going to be the biggest bang for your buck,'' Scioscia said. ``With Kelvim is it keeping him available to pitch, even if it's every other day, during this stretch? Or giving him one start of possibly six or seven innings?''

Saunders has not pitched since being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake last Friday. He pitched 7 2/3 innings against Toronto on Aug. 16 in his major-league debut.

``Being a former catcher, I certainly see all the little things he did,'' Scioscia said. ``I see the impact he's had on this organization.''
