ANGELS NOTEBOOK: VAUGHN STRUGGLING AT PLATE.

Byline: Joe Haakenson

Another day, another hitless day.

Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.

It is the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the home field for night games of the Arizona League Tempe Angels. , dropping his spring average to .192 (5 for 26).

(double). He has struck out a team-leading eight times. Nobody, though, is worried.

``I'm not worried about my offense, ever,'' Vaughn said. ``The only thing I worry about is defense and my defense has been fine.''

Vaughn made a few nice plays on hard grounders Wednesday and has been good in the field all spring. The offense, Vaughn insists, will be there.

``I still look at spring training as a time to get yourself in shape,'' he said. ``Get a good routine going. You'll see a different player when the season comes. You become a different player as you get older because you understand what you need to do to get ready. You see a lot of bad swings in Arizona, it's just something you have to work through.''

``Spring training in Arizona is a lot different than spring training in Florida,'' manager Terry Collins said, noting Vaughn's first year playing in the Cactus League. ``That's an adjustment itself. He's been taking extra batting practice every day. He comes to the cage and works with (hitting coach) Rod (Carew).''

Belcher was happy with his performance, but laughed when he heard the radio announcer say Belcher ``went five strong innings.''

``It's so funny, he said. ``You give up eight hits, but because only one touched the plate, they say `five strong innings.'

Extra work for Salmon: Tim Salmon
Timothy James "Tim" Salmon (born August 24, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball right fielder/designated hitter who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise.
, who had two hits against the Brewers, will go to the minor-league camp in Mesa today to get some extra at-bats.

Salmon traditionally has been a slow starter, but for the past couple of seasons he's tried to get extra work in during the spring in order to start the season better. Collins said Salmon might get 10 or 15 at-bats today.

This and that: Former Angels pitcher Jim Abbott

, now with the Brewers, did not make the trip for Wednesday's game. In three starts, Abbott is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA and has walked only one in 11-1/3 innings.
