ANGELS NOTEBOOK: VALDEZ TURNAROUND NO SURPRISE TO SCIOSCIA.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

DETROIT - Ismael Valdes' value as a pitcher was at a career-low after his injury-plagued season last year with the Cubs and Dodgers. Add to that his reputation for lacking toughness, and Valdes went into this season with a lot to prove.

Valdes has seemed to answer his critics this season, going 8-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 18 starts. He has been on the disabled list twice this season, but otherwise has been a key starter in the Angels' run for a wild-card berth.

Still, Valdes said he will never change the minds of some people and what they think about him.

``People are always going to talk,'' said Valdes, who is making $2.5 million this season with the potential to make an additional $2.7 million in incentives. ``I could do well, throw 30 complete games, I don't care

, and somebody is going to say something about the one game I didn't complete.''

Manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
, though, has always been in Valdes' corner and said he isn't surprised at what Valdes has done this season.

``I think Ismael prepares himself as well as anybody,'' Scioscia said. ``We had it drilled into us being in a pitching-oriented organization (Dodgers).

``I think his confidence is as high as I've seen it. He's very decisive in what he wants to do. He executes his pitches with uncanny command. That's a pretty good combination.''

--Road trip: The Angels begin a six-game trip to Detroit and Cleveland tonight but seem to feel at home away from home; they are 14-3 in their past 17 road games. But Scioscia said it's a more a reflection of how they're playing, not where or who they're playing.

``We've played the last three or four weeks the way we envisioned we could,'' he said. ``When we do that, we feel we can match up with anybody.''
