ANGELS NOTEBOOK: TEMPERS FLARE IN TEMPE.

Byline: Joe Haakenson

A sure sign players are on edge, itching to leave camp and get the season started came at the end of Wednesday's game between the Angels and Seattle Mariners at Tempe Diablo Stadium Tempe Diablo Stadium is a baseball field located in Tempe, Arizona. It is the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the home field for night games of the Arizona League Tempe Angels. .

The Angels' Phil Nevin and Mariners pitcher Jose Paniagua had to be separated twice following the game, which ended when Paniagua got Nevin to pop out to the catcher.

Paniagua, upset that Orlando Palmeiro stole second with two out and the Angels trailing 9-3, threw a 2-0 pitch just under Nevin's chin. Nevin said he had no problem with it at the time, figuring the pitch got away from Paniagua.

But after Nevin popped out and began walking toward the dugout, Paniagua began screaming at Nevin, causing players from both teams to gather behind the plate. Order was restored, but only temporarily.

As many of the Angels did wind sprints in shallow right field, the Mariners had to walk past the Angels to get to their bus. When Paniagua walked by, more words were exchanged. After Paniagua yelled obscenities and grabbed his crotch crotch

, Nevin went after Paniagua but was restrained by manager Terry Collins and bench coach Joe Maddon.

After Nevin reached the clubhouse, he told reporters the incident won't be forgotten.

``I'm walking to the dugout and he's yelling at me,'' Nevin said. ``I said `What are you talking about?' He was yelling about Orlando stealing. He just doesn't know the game. He's telling me `I've got your number.' I told him I'll give him my phone number and he can come over to my house. Or I'll go to his house. He's a disgrace to the game.''

Another cast: The results of X-rays on shortstop Gary DiSarcina's left forearm showed the bone is healing properly, but because it has not healed completely, he was fitted with another cast that he'll wear for at least another week.

DiSarcina was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, meaning the earliest he can play is the third game of the season April 8. DiSarcina will aim to be ready by then, though that would only give him about a week to do so.

Also placed on the disabled list effective Wednesday were Justin Baughman (15-day), Jack McDowell (15-day), Pep Harris (15-day) and Mike James (60-day).
