ANGELS NOTEBOOK: TEAM'S ODD CATCHING SITUATION IS A PICK SIX.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

The Angels have made it clear that one of their top priorities this offseason is solidifying the starting catching position. So far, the Angels are happy with the progress of 25-year-old Ben Molina, who has played solid defense in 13 games and is hitting .255 with one homer and nine RBI RBI

So where does that leave Todd Greene Todd Anthony Greene (born May 8, 1971 in Augusta, Georgia) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who is currently a free agent. He previously played for the Anaheim Angels (1996-2000), Toronto Blue Jays (2000), New York Yankees (2001), Texas Rangers 2002-2003) and the Colorado  and Matt Walbeck Matthew Lovick Walbeck (Born: October 2, 1969 in Sacramento, California) is a former righthanded Major League Baseball catcher who played from 1993 to 2003 for the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Anaheim Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. ? Once touted as their catcher of the future, Greene's future with the club is in question.

He has caught in only 13 games this season and won't catch anymore. The Angels are out of the race and Greene's surgically repaired right shoulder is still an issue.

Greene, making $225,000 this season, is eligible for arbitration. But he says he doesn't worry about being left out of the Angels' plans in their search for a catcher.

``If I can catch I'm going to fit in somewhere,'' said Greene, hitting .238 with 14 homers and 36 RBI. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Greene said his first choice is to remain with the Angels.

``I don't think a player that comes up through an organization wants to go elsewhere unless there's a better opportunity elsewhere,'' Greene said. ``(General manager Bill) Bavasi was the minor-league coordinator when I first started, (bench coach) Joe Maddon Joseph John Maddon (born February 8 1954, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania) is the current manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Major League Baseball, having been announced to that position on November 15, 2005.  and (hitting coach) Rod Carew

Washburn to start: Left-hander Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game  will start Friday in Boston despite two bad starts since his call-up from Triple-A Edmonton.

``We brought him here to pitch, so we're going to pitch him,'' manager Terry Collins said.

Finley admits that since his name isn't mentioned in trade rumors anymore, his mind ``has been freed up. Finley is a free agent at the end of the season but will probably wait until the season's over to begin serious negotiations. Finley is believed to be seeking a two-year deal worth about $14 million. Joey Hamilton (6-7, 6.47) will start for Toronto.
