ANGELS NOTEBOOK: STONEMAN SIGNS FOUR-YEAR DEAL.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - When Arte Moreno's purchase of the Angels was completed in May, he told reporters general manager Bill Stoneman
William Hambly Stoneman III (born April 7, 1944, in Oak Park, Illinois) is a consultant for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. From 1999 to October 15, 2007, he served as the general manager of the Angels.
would keep his job as long as he wanted.

On Wednesday, Moreno put that commitment in writing, signing Stoneman to a four-year contract extension with a three-year agreement to serve as a consultant.

Stoneman, 59, a West Covina West Covina, city (1990 pop. 96,086), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Gabriel valley; settled 1905, inc. 1923. Before World War II, West Covina was a small rural community where walnuts, wheat, and livestock were raised.  native, said he might consider staying on as GM past the four-year mark but wants to leave his options open.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it's believed Stoneman received a decent raise from his previous contract.

``My thinking is, I love it here and I don't want to go anywhere else,'' Stoneman said. ``This is a busy job. It's certainly a 24-7, 365-days-a-year job. If, a few years out, I still feel good about it, we'll talk about still going forward.''

Stoneman was hired in November 1999 to replace Bill Bavasi William J. Bavasi (born December 27, 1957, Pasadena, California) is the current general manager and vice president of baseball operations for the Seattle Mariners. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB . By the end of Stoneman's new four-year commitment, he will match original Angel GM Fred Haney Fred Girard Haney (April 25, 1898 – November 9, 1977) was an American third baseman, manager, coach and executive in Major League Baseball. As a manager, he won two pennants and a world championship with the Milwaukee Braves and, as an executive, he was the first general  as the longest-tenured GM in team history.

That is the sort of stability that appealed to Moreno, who grew fond of Stoneman when they met in March.

``The way I do business is I like to have that solid foundation,'' said Moreno, who amassed a fortune in the outdoor billboards business. ``You want to build that foundation on stone. He brought a championship to Anaheim. For the next seven years, he's stuck with me.

--Eckstein out: Shortstop David Eckstein David Mark Eckstein, (born January 20, 1975 in Sanford, Florida), is a Major League Baseball shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is noted for his size, as he is a small (for professional sports) 5' 7", but weighs 175 pounds.  is not expected to return until after the All-Star break because of the bruised joint in his shoulder and strained upper trapezoid trapezoid, closed plane figure bounded by four line segments, or sides, two of which are parallel and two of which are nonparallel. The parallel sides of a trapezoid are called bases and the nonparallel sides legs; in an isosceles trapezoid the legs are of equal  muscle.

Eckstein, hurt when he hit the ground hard Sunday while catching a pop fly, was limited to bunting and running the bases Wednesday, and he isn't expected to begin throwing until Friday. With the All-Star break coming after Sunday's game, the Angels figure it makes more sense for Eckstein to get a week off rather than rush back for possibly just one game.

``We don't anticipate it being any longer than the back end of the break,'' manager Mike Scioscia said.

--Molina outvoted: Bengie Molina finished last among five players in online balloting for the 32nd and final spot on the American League All-Star roster. Boston catcher Jason Varitek won, followed by Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. ``He deserved to go,'' Molina said of Varitek. ``I'm happy for him. I'm a little disappointed. Obviously, it's a big deal. But I don't feel bad at all. I'll go home and rest.''
