ANGELS NOTEBOOK: STEALING AWAY INTO THE NIGHT SCIOSCIA'S ANGELS AGGRESSIVE ON BASEPATHS.

Byline: Gordon Verrell Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - At the rate they're going, the Angels will wind up with about 180 stolen bases this season, which would be the second-most in club history, and a little surprising since the man flashing the signs, manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
, was never what you'd call an artist on the basepaths in his playing days.

The only green light he ever saw was on the way home from the ballpark. Four times in his 12-year big-league career, Scioscia made it through an entire season without so much as one stolen base.

Yet, he's got the Angels on the move, with 21 thefts their first 19 games.

``We'll be smart about it,'' Scioscia said, cautioning. ``But if there's a window there to be aggressive, we want to take advantage of it.

``We're not likely to have anyone in the 60- to 70-(stolen-base) range, but I think we can expand on what some guys have done in the past.''

Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006). , for example. Erstad entered Monday night's game against Detroit with six steals, nearly half the 13 he pilfered all last season.

``More so than stolen bases, it's going from first to third, and taking the extra base, things like that,'' Scioscia said. ``We want to be very aggressive that way.''

    --DiSarcina back: Gary DiSarcina
Gary Thomas DiSarcina (born November 19, 1967 in Malden, Massachusetts) is a Minor league baseball manager and a former shortstop in Major League Baseball. He was raised in Billerica, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
was back at shortstop Monday night after missing 14 games because of a bruised left thumb, and none too soon as far as Scioscia is concerned.

``It's huge having him back,'' Scioscia said. ``Of all the players on the club, he's the glue on that infield. He gets that great jump, he's out there talking it up with the other guys no matter the score.

``He's a gamer, the kind of guy you win with.''

To make room on the active roster for DiSarcina, the Angels shipped infielder Keith Johnson to Triple-A Edmonton. Johnson got into just five games during DiSarcina's stay on the disabled list, but he did well: two hits in three at-bats.

In one other move, the Angels switched pitcher Tim Belcher's rehab assignment from Single-A Lake Elsinore to Triple-A Edmonton. He's scheduled to start tonight for Edmonton at Calgary.

--Tigers by the tail: Phil Garner
Philip Mason Garner (born April 30, 1949, in Jefferson City, Tennessee) is a former infielder in Major League Baseball for the Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants from 1973 to 1988.
, the Detroit manager, didn't mince words in explaining the Tigers' major-league-worst 4-13 record - not to mention their seven-game losing streak - coming into the series.

``We haven't hit, pitched or made routine plays on defense,'' he said, pretty well covering it.

Who might get suspended or fined or both is up to Major League Baseball's vice president of on-field activities, Frank Robinson, a fellow who had a scrape or two in his day. Palmer is a strong candidate for a suspension; he was thrown out after the first melee, but he reappeared on the field for the second one, a definite no-no.

--Tonight's matchup: Kent Bottenfield (1-2) starts tonight for the Angels, opposing Detroit's Hideo Nomo (1-1).

It will be Nomo's third appearance against the Angels, the previous two in interleague games while with the Dodgers. He's 1-0 with a 2.19 earned-run average against Anaheim.

Bottenfield was 1-0 against the Tigers last year in two starts for St. Louis.
