said DaVanon, a switch-hitter, has cut down his right-handed swing, he rarely plays against left-handers. Against right-handers, he's seeing fewer fastballs, one reason he had eight home runs June 4 and just 10 now.

``Since I had the home run stretch, they haven't pitched me like that,'' DaVanon said. ``That's one reason why I haven't been able to keep up the power numbers. They were throwing me inside; now they're throwing me away.''

DaVanon's average is a solid .320, but his infrequent playing time since center fielder Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. He's hitting .237 (9 for 38) this month and has just 27 at-bats in the past 15 games.

``The balls he's hitting hard, he's fouling them back, just missing them,'' Scioscia said. ``At the beginning of the year, he was on everything. That was reflected in his production.

    ``But I think Jeff's learning. He's made huge strides. It's not like he said, `Here I am, I made adjustments, now I'll have a 10-year career.' ''

When DaVanon sees a pitch he likes, he takes a massive cut, but he also can get on base by bunting or slapping the ball the other way.

Callaway's 30-day rehab assignment expires today and Scioscia indicated it's likely his shoulder tendinitis has subsided. Callaway is out of options, and the Angels don't believe he would clear waivers if they tried to send him to the minors.

--Glaus day-to-day: Third baseman Troy Glaus sat out Tuesday's game with a sore shoulder and is listed as day-to-day. He said he wasn't sure whether he'd play today at Texas. ...
