ANGELS NOTEBOOK: SHIELDS MAKING CHOICE EASY.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

OAKLAND - Scot Shields Scot Shields (b. July 22, 1975, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, with whom he has spent his entire career, serving as their setup man since 2005.  knows the Angels have made acquiring a starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game
baseball, baseball game - a ball game played with a bat and ball between two teams of nine players; teams take turns at bat trying to score runs; "he played baseball in high school";
 their top offseason priority. And he knows anybody wishing to fill a spot in the rotation next season, as he does, has to last longer than four innings.

So, after Shields was drilled for four home runs and seven runs in the Oakland Athletics' 14-4 victory Thursday, he could see the writing on the wall. Manager Mike Scioscia
    Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
     said he expects Shields to make his final three starts this season, but it might be too late for Shields to convince the Angels to spend their dollars elsewhere this winter.

    ``From a business standpoint, I'm not doing anything to enhance putting me in the rotation next year,'' said Shields, who has given up 39 hits in his past 25 innings. ``One of the things they've talked about is going out and getting someone. I'm not proving them wrong.

    ``I suck right now. I got frickin' 12 outs (Thursday).''

    Shields yielded home runs to Eric Chavez Eric Cesar Chavez (pronounced CHA-vez) (born December 7, 1977 in Los Angeles, California) is a Mexican-American third baseman in Major League Baseball who has played for the Oakland Athletics since 1998. , Mark Ellis Mark Ellis is the name of:

    UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
    ), the first homer Byrnes had hit since June 29. After pitching into the seventh inning in three consecutive starts last month, Shields has failed to last more than five innings in four starts since.

    Shields' ball is lacking the wicked movement that enabled him to post a 1.68 ERA as a reliever, and when it does dip and dart, it tends to cross right through the heart of the plate.

    But Shields, now 2-5 with a 5.01 ERA as a starter, insists he's not tired. Scioscia said it could be a matter of Shields not mixing his pitches effectively.

    ``He might have gotten into that reliever's mentality of going hard with two pitches,'' Scioscia said. ``But he needs to do more, and he will do more. On days you don't have command, you need to pitch more.''

    --Gregg gets nod: Scioscia confirmed that Kevin Gregg will make his third start of the season Sunday in place of Ramon Ortiz.

    --In one day, out the next: One day after returning to the lineup, shortstop David Eckstein was out of it, partly because Scioscia said he wants to ease Eckstein back into playing. The other reason? Prospect Alfredo Amezaga was ready to play for the first time since suffering a torn labrum labrum /la·brum/ (la´brum) pl. la´bra   [L.] an edge, rim, or lip.
