ANGELS NOTEBOOK: SCIOSCIA LIKES HIS TEAM'S 1ST OUTING.
Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Angels tasted live action for the first time this spring, playing an intrasquad game Tuesday, the Temps against the Madmen.
The Temps, managed by Garry Templeton Garry Lewis Templeton (born March 24, 1956 in Lockney, Texas) was a Major League Baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets from 1976 to 1991. , were made up of what could be the Angels' opening-day lineup: Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006). , DH; Jim Edmonds James Patrick "Jim" Edmonds (born June 27, 1970 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed batter who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals. Edmonds is affectionately known as Jimmy Baseball [1], "Lassie" and as "Hollywood"[2] among Cardinals fans. , CF; Mo Vaughn Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003. , 1B; Tim Salmon Timothy James "Tim" Salmon (born August 24, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball right fielder/designated hitter who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise. , RF; Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. , LF; Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005). , 3B; Scott Spiezio, 2B; Matt Walbeck, C, and Gary DiSarcina, SS. The only starting spots in question are at second base and catcher.
Ramon Ortiz started for the Temps and threw one perfect inning, and Ken Hill started for the Madmen, also throwing a perfect inning, including a strikeout of Mo Vaughn.
``It was exciting,'' manager Mike Scioscia said of the game, won 3-2 by the Temps. ``There were a lot of great signs. There was good situational hitting, guys got bunts down and we turned some double plays.''
There was one minor mishap. On a single to right field by Vaughn, Jim Edmonds was waved around third by third-base coach Ron Roenicke but Edmonds stopped. He scored anyway when the right fielder booted the ball, but Roenicke appeared baffled by Edmonds' actions. As Edmonds entered the dugout, Scioscia asked Edmonds what happened.
``He looked back and thought the ball got knocked down (by an infielder),'' Scioscia said. ``That's what intrasquad games are for - to work out some kinks.''
The Angels play Arizona State tonight at 7.
--New approach: There were some players who relied heavily on former hitting coach Rod Carew. But even though Carew brought instant respect based on his seven batting titles and Hall of Fame status, Salmon said the hitters might be able to learn from other opinions.
``You can always gain from new knowledge,'' Salmon said. ``What Rod did will be missed, but this is new insight with (hitting coach) Mickey (Hatcher) and Mike (Scioscia) coming in.''
--Friday's starter: Left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn will start for the Angels when they begin Cactus League play Friday against the Mariners.
