ANGELS NOTEBOOK: SCIOSCIA CAREFUL WITH HIS QUOTES.

Byline: David Felton Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Give Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
credit. He might utter the occasional Crash Davis-type ``We're taking it one day at a time'' quote, but he won't be baited into giving an opponent anything to tack to a bulletin board.

The day after ripping apart Chicago pitching for 19 runs May 10, Scioscia was given the chance to compare the previous night's game to a batting-practice session. He wouldn't bite.

On Monday, when asked if his streaking team approached teams such as AL Central fourth-place team Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. (inc. 1850).  any differently than others, Scioscia again took the high road.

``Any team on any given night can beat any other team,'' Scioscia said. ``We're facing big-league pitching (against the Royals). There's a lot of talent on major-league teams. The Royals' record might indicate they're having a tough time, but they're a very talented team.''

--Perfect pitch: Entering Monday's game, Angels starting pitchers had posted 21 quality starts (six innings pitched In baseball, innings pitched (IP) are the number of innings a pitcher has completed, measured by the number of batters and baserunners that are put out while the pitcher is in the game. Three outs made is equal to one inning pitched. , three or fewer earned runs) in their past 30 games. Starters also have won 14 of the Angels' 21 games.

``(The starters) are doing what we had hoped they would do and we expect them to do,'' Scioscia said.

To begin the season, starters won just 5 of 20 games.

``The real challenge is doing it through the whole season,'' Scioscia said. ``A big part of a championship club is the starting pitching.''

But it hasn't been just the starters. The bullpen has posted a 1.84 ERA recently (10 earned runs in the past 49 innings), elevating the staff to third in the AL in ERA (3.89) behind Boston (3.26) and New York New York, state, United States

Gil made his Major League Baseball debut with the Texas Rangers on April 5, 1993.
and Shawn Wooten William Shawn Wooten (born July 24, 1972 in Glendora, California), is a catcher who is currently with the New Orleans Zephyrs of the New York Mets organization. Previously, Wooten played with the Anaheim Angels (2000-03), the Philadelphia Phillies (2004), Boston Red Sox (2005) and  continue to rehab in Mesa, Ariz. Gil, recovering from a sprained left ankle, should move on to the Angels' Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City by Thursday, where he'll spend time at first base, second base and shortstop.

Wooten (right-thumb surgery) isn't expected back until after the All-Star break.
