Byline: Gordon Verrell Staff Writer

Catcher Benji Gil Romar Benjamin Gil Aguilar (born October 6, 1972, in Tijuana, Mexico) was a Major League Baseball utility player.

Gil made his Major League Baseball debut with the Texas Rangers on April 5, 1993.

``It's going to be awhile,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
said when asked if he could pinpoint a date for Gil's return. ``The swelling's gone down, but he's still sore, very sore. It's 10 days or so we're looking at.''

Gil sprained his left ankle in the first inning of Friday's game at Texas, when the Rangers' Rusty Greer
Thurman Clyde "Rusty" Greer III (born January 21, 1969 in Fort Rucker, Alabama) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder for the Texas Rangers. He currently serves as head coach of the Colleyville LoneStars of the Texas Collegiate League.
, in an attempt to beat out an infield single, slid into first base, taking out Gil.

``I'm sure if it lingers, he'll be re-evaluated,'' Scioscia said. ``There are times when a sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint.  is so bad it's almost worse than a break. So far, his progress is not dramatic.''

--Garnering support: Scioscia and Phil Garner
Philip Mason Garner (born April 30, 1949, in Jefferson City, Tennessee) is a former infielder in Major League Baseball for the Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants from 1973 to 1988.

What Scioscia said impressed him the most about Garner was the way his Detroit teams played.

``His teams played hard, they were always well-prepared,'' Scioscia of Garner. ``Phil was very innovative, he wasn't afraid to try different things. He's a very good baseball man.

``It's unfortunate. These things happen. The results weren't there, and that's what we're all accountable for.''

--Suspension suspended: Scott Spiezio made his season debut after sitting out a five-game suspension for his role in the March 9 brawl with the San Diego Padres, and Troy Glaus, who was also involved, started his two-day hiatus.

Spiezio singled his first time to the plate, sparking the Angels' two-out, two-run rally in the second inning.

As for Glaus, who hit three homers his first five games - the Angels' only homers entering Monday night's game - Scioscia said, ``His presence is a big part of our lineup.''

``But,'' he continued before the game, ``I'm confident we can play little ball and manufacture some runs. We're not going to have him for two days, but we're going to go after it anyway.''

--Around the horn: Tuesday night was the first of 19 games between the Angels and Mariners as well as the fourth game of a 19-game run exclusively against AL West clubs.
