ANGELS NOTEBOOK: SCIOSCIA: DONNELLY COULD BE BACK BY EARLY MAY.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - The morning after being hit by a batting-practice flyball that broke his nose in 20 places March 9, Brendan Donnelly Brendan Kevin Donnelly (b. July 4, 1971 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.

Donnelly had bounced around the minor leagues for 10 seasons after he was drafted in 1992 by the Chicago White Sox before he finally made his

But subsequent problems and surgeries have kept Donnelly away from the card games and his teammates all season.

Still in Arizona, Donnelly is making enough progress that manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
said if all goes well, Donnelly could return to his spot in the bullpen by early May.

``It's a target, but it's in pencil,'' Scioscia said. ``He's playing catch, doing cardiovascular exercises and PFP PFP - Plastic Flat Package  (pitchers fielding practice). The more he gets into baseball activities, the better idea we'll have on when he'll be back. ... It could be within weeks, but if he has a setback it could be a little longer.''

The Angels have managed to get by without Donnelly in their primary set-up role, instead using Francisco Rodriguez Francisco Rodriguez may refer to:

. Rodriguez needed only 16 pitches to put away the four A's hitters he faced Saturday night - all by strikeout.

In six appearances, Rodriguez has been nearly unhittable, throwing 6 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run earned run

But where Donnelly's absence hurts the Angels is in their bullpen depth, and it showed Sunday night against the A's. After using Rodriguez, Scot Shields and Troy Percival on Saturday, Scioscia used Ben Weber and Kevin Gregg on Sunday and a 4-1 game through six innings became 7-1 through seven innings.

``It's like spring training all over again for him,'' Scioscia said.

--Kennedy sits: Continuing his plan to rest the regular players on occasion to keep them fresh, Scioscia sat down second baseman Adam Kennedy on Sunday. Kennedy is hitting just .227, but has a team-leading 12 RBI RBI

The opposing pitcher Sunday was left-hander Barry Zito, but the left- handed-hitting Kennedy has fared well against left-handers this year, batting .333 (3 for 9). For his career, Kennedy is 1 for 9 against Zito.

Taking Kennedy's place at second base was Shane Halter, who entered the game hitting .238 (5 for 21) with one homer against Zito in his career.
