Santana began the year at Double-A Arkansas but joined the Angels in May when Escobar was injured. When Escobar returned, Santana went to Triple-A Salt Lake. He returned to the Angels on June 14.

Santana showed his resilience when after being beaten up by the Indians in his major-league debut, he followed it up with a shutout of the White Sox, at the time the hottest team in the league.

``We're much better off with Ervin as a starter and inserting Kelvim to help us win late in games,'' Scioscia said. ``If Kelvim starts we're only looking at five or six innings anyway. He's taken a big piece of the `pen and bridged a lot of gaps.''

--Going for 40: Going into Tuesday's game, closer Francisco Rodriguez had 38 saves, needing two to become only the third Angels pitcher to get 40 saves in a season. Bryan Harvey set the club record with 46 in 1991, and Troy Percival did it twice, 42 in 1998 and 40 in 2002.

``At the beginning of the season my goal was just to stay healthy,'' Rodriguez said.
