Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

Right fielder right fielder
n. Baseball
The player who defends right field.

Noun 1. right fielder - the person who plays right field

 Tim Salmon
Timothy James "Tim" Salmon (born August 24, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball right fielder/designated hitter who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise.
will begin a rehab assignment at Single-A Lake Elsinore today and could be in the Angels' starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .
A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes
     this weekend.

``The goal is to have me play in a game or two here before going to Texas (next Wednesday),'' said Salmon, who has been out since May 3 with a sprained left wrist.

Salmon took batting practice during the break and again Thursday, hitting off manager Terry Collins. He said he feels no pain in the wrist but has general soreness.

``It's getting harder and harder to get out of bed each day,'' Salmon said. ``But it's a true sign I'm playing again.''

Salmon took 70 swings Thursday and ran the bases. He'll bat leadoff - in order to get as many at-bats as possible - and be the DH at Lake Elsinore today.

``I told him when the game is over to call me and leave me a message,'' Collins said of Salmon. ``Tell me how he feels. I don't care

if he goes 0 for 5 or 5 for 5, that's not the issue. Did you check any swings? How's your bat speed?''

Salmon said he would prefer not to go on a rehab assignment at all, but he'll abide by Collins' wishes. Even so, it won't be for very long.

``He's going to be one of those guys who will have to play his way into shape up here,'' Collins said.

Edmonds progressing: The news is good also on center fielder Jim Edmonds James Patrick "Jim" Edmonds (born June 27, 1970 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed batter who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals. Edmonds is affectionately known as Jimmy Baseball [1], "Lassie" and as "Hollywood"[2] among Cardinals fans. . Edmonds took batting practice for the first time since surgery on his right shoulder April 19. He could begin a rehab assignment early next week.

``It felt OK,'' Edmonds said. ``It was like the first day of spring training.''

Belcher plays catch: Pitcher Tim Belcher
Timothy Wayne Belcher (Born October 19, 1961) in Mount Gilead, Ohio, is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. He won the Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year Award in 1988 for the National League.
played catch Wednesday for the first time since he broke the pinky finger on his right (pitching) hand June 26.

``I've still got some soreness and tenderness, but it hasn't been three weeks yet,'' Belcher said. ``Between the third and fourth week (next week), I expect dramatic improvement.''

Belcher said he doesn't think he'll need a rehab assignment because once he starts pitching off the mound again, ``I need to generate 100 percent arm speed and that's just a matter of a few days.''

More injury news: Outfielder Matt Luke Matthew Clifford Luke (born February 26, 1971 in Long Beach, California) is a former outfielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball. He attended college at the University of California and played for five different major league teams in his career: the New York Yankees, Los  (strained muscle in side) and catcher Charlie O'Brien

(elbow surgery) threw 60 pitches Thursday. Also, pitcher Jack McDowell made his third rehab start for Triple-A Edmonton. McDowell allowed 11 hits, including two homers, and six earned runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Collins skips game: Collins said he did not watch Tuesday's All-Star Game. Instead he went to dinner at Spago in Beverly Hills.

``I've heard so much about it,'' Collins said. ``I've seen Pedro (Martinez) strike out four of five and I've seen (Mark) McGwire hit home runs in batting practice. The only thing I wanted to see was Percy (Troy Percival). And he didn't pitch so I didn't miss anything.''
