Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006). , who's been on the disabled list since June 23 with an irritated right ankle, was running the bases aggressively and taking balls at first before the Angels' game against Seattle.

``I'm simulating a lot of situations right now because I'm trying to get to full speed as fast as I can,'' Erstad said. ``I felt fine the other day hitting and about the only thing that still bothers me is stopping and starting real quickly.

``But the pain is tolerable and if it stay's where it's at, then I think I have a chance to play again this season.''

Erstad played first base for the Angels the past two season, winning a Gold Glove in 2004 before he was switched to center field this season to make room for Casey Kotchman Casey John Kotchman (born February 22, 1983 in St. Petersburg, Florida) is a Major League Baseball first baseman for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He hit his first Major League home run on August 5 2005. In 47 games in 2005, Kotchman had 7 home runs and 22 runs batted in. .

Even if Erstad is capable of coming back, there's no guarantee he'll be better than he was at the beginning of the year. In 27 games, he batted just .220 with no home runs and five RBIs.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said if Erstad does return this season, it would be at first base, but that his return is at least a couple of weeks away.

``Darin is doing a little better every day, but he's not at the level where he needs to be to help us,'' Scioscia said. ``He's getting closer, but he still needs to test his ankle and have the confidence that he'll be able to play first base again.''

Welcome back: After spending the past three days watching the games on TV in his office while serving a suspension, Scioscia said he's glad he'll be back in the dugout today.

``It's not like I was relaxing watching the game on TV, that's for sure,'' Scioscia said. ``You know, the only time I turn on the TV is when I've been suspended or thrown out of a game, and in my seven years here, I think it's been on a total of four times.

``But I've caught myself yelling at the TV, and I think I even hugged it once when we did something good.''
