ANGELS NOTEBOOK: NEW FACES LOOK AWFULLY FAMILIAR IN ANGELS' LINEUP : MCDOWELL, ERSTAD RETURN TO ACTION JUST IN TIME FOR RACE.

Byline: Joe Haakenson San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Tribune

Angels manager Terry Collins said he couldn't imagine a trade that would make his team any better than it will be with the addition of two new players he'll have in tonight's lineup against the Tigers.

Pitcher Jack McDowell
Jack Burns McDowell (born January 16, 1966 in Van Nuys, California) is a former Major League Baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, McDowell won the American League Cy Young Award in 1993. He was nicknamed "Black Jack".
will make his first start since May 31, when elbow problems landed him on the disabled list. Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  will play for the first time since Aug. 3, when he suffered a strained left hamstring. He'll start at first base.

``All of a sudden, you're getting quality people back,'' Collins said. ``It's like getting new blood.''

McDowell signed an incentive-laden contract - $1 million base with potential to reach $6 million - but it hasn't exactly worked out with all his time on the DL. But with the team in a pennant race, McDowell says he's satisfied to come back.

``I'm happy I'm in a position where I can help us out,'' he said. ``Coming back wouldn't have made any difference if we were 10 games out.''

McDowell said despite a 2-1/2-month layoff he won't be nervous when he takes the mound.

``It's not something to be nervous about,'' he said. ``It's something to be locked in about.''

McDowell has been on the active roster since Saturday, when he began serving his four-game suspension for his role in the June 2 fight in Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. (inc. 1850). . But with Erstad activated today, someone must go.

Collins said reserve outfielder Reggie Williams Reggie Williams may refer to:
    • Reggie Williams (baseball player), a former outfielder in MLB during the 1990s.
    • Reggie Williams (baseball 1980s), a former outfielder in MLB during the 1980s.
    • Reggie Williams (wide receiver), a wide receiver in the NFL.
will start tonight's game to give Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  a rest, meaning the likely odd man out is first baseman Chris Pritchett Christopher Davis Pritchett (born January 31 1970, in Merced, California) is a former Major League Baseball first baseman. He is an alumnus of the University of California, Los Angeles. . Pritchett would stay if someone was put on the disabled list instead, and Craig Shipley Craig Barry Shipley (born January 7, 1963 in Parramatta, Australia) was an Infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1986-87), New York Mets (1989), San Diego Padres (1991-94 and 1996-97), Houston Astros (1995) and Anaheim Angels (1998).  has been bothered lately with a sore hamstring.

Up-Hill battle: Pitcher Ken Hill (elbow) pitched on Tuesday night for Single-A Lake Elsinore at Stockton in what was supposed to be his final rehab start. He was supposed to make 90 pitches but made only 70 in four innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) and five hits while walking five and striking out two.

Hill was expected to be activated to start on Sunday against Toronto in Anaheim, pushing Chuck Finley back a day to start against the Yankees in New York New York, state, United States

. Now, though, the situation might be a little clouded.

Catcher Charlie O'Brien has started throwing as part of his rehab for a broken right thumb but there is no timetable for his return.
