ANGELS NOTEBOOK: NATIONAL PRIDE IS PUT ASIDE.

Byline: DOUG PADILLA Douglas ("Doug") Padilla (born October 4, 1956 in Oakland, California) is a former middle and long distance runner from the United States, who won the overall Grand Prix 1985 and the World Cup 5000m race in 1985.   Staff Writer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- If a guy could actually be disappointed by making the major leagues, Curtis Pride Curtis John Pride (born December 17, 1968 in Washington, D.C.) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder. After spending 2007 spring training as a non-roster invitee for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, he has been assigned to start the 2007 season as a member of the Salt Lake  is that guy.

Pride said he had mixed emotions about being recalled to the Angels late Monday night. He arrived in the clubhouse about two hours before Tuesday's game after a long cross-country trip.

``I got invited to play for Team USA

Team USA (also known as Team NWA or Team TNA) is a wrestling faction brought together as part of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's X-Cup Tournaments, which
and I was supposed to leave Aug. 16 to help them qualify for the Olympics,'' Pride said of the upcoming qualifying tournament in Cuba. ``It would have been an honor to go to Cuba to help Team USA for Olympic qualifying.''

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, will be the last to have baseball as a medal sport.

To understand Pride's disappointment a little better is to know the veteran's past. Pride, 37, was also a standout soccer player growing up and was invited to qualify for the U.S. National Team. But that invite came about in the late 1980s and Pride wanted to concentrate on pursuing a professional baseball career so he declined.

Once again, Pride will miss his chance to represent his country.

Pride has spent time time with the Angels in each of the past three seasons. Born 95 percent deaf due to a rubella rubella or German measles, acute infectious disease of children and young adults. It is caused by a filterable virus that is spread by droplet spray from the respiratory tract of an infected individual.  infection his mother suffered during pregnancy, Pride has played for six different organizations and is a career .251 major-league hitter with 19 home runs and 80 RBIs in 399 games.

Pride batted .318 at Triple-A Salt Lake this season with seven home runs and 41 RBIs. Despite getting up in age and not being on the 40-man roster until Tuesday, Pride said he never thought about ending his baseball career.

One potential problem is that if traded, Abreu reportedly wants his 2008 option to be picked up, and no wonder since it's worth $16 million. Abreu also has a no-trade clause in his contract, but could agree to come to the Angels since he is good friends with Vladimir Guerrero.
