ANGELS NOTEBOOK: MOYER GETS THE BEST OF SALMON THIS TIME.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

SEATTLE - Word is that Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer is a bit kooky, and Angels right fielder Tim Salmon would agree, particularly after what happened in Wednesday night's game.

In the fifth inning of a 2-1 game, Salmon was on first base as the Angels had the bases loaded with one out and Garret Anderson batting. Anderson kept fouling off pitches, five in all with two strikes.

While catcher Joe Oliver visited Moyer on the mound, Moyer, exasperated, caught Salmon's eye.

``He just got my attention, but I didn't know what he was gesturing to,'' Salmon said. ``I said, 'Are you talking to me? Who are you talking to?' Griff (first-base coach Alfredo Griffin) said he's asking what pitch you think he should throw. He was just making light of a pressure situation.''

Salmon said he didn't offer a suggestion, and on the next pitch Moyer struck out Anderson on a 75-mph changeup. Moyer than turned toward Salmon and said, ``Thank you.''

``In hindsight, I should have stuck one finger down for fastball,'' Salmon said. ``He caught me off guard. . . . My fault.''

--Done with Safeco: The Angels won't play at Safeco Field again this season, and Troy Glaus couldn't be happier.

Glaus had three hits in the Angels' first game at Safeco Field this year, but in the past five, he's 1 for 19 with 15 strikeouts.

``Sometimes when guys get on a roll and have been so steady as Troy's been, they tend to spoil you,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``They go good so long you expect it all the time. But it's not going to happen.''

--Hits leader: Darin Erstad had three more hits Thursday to increase his major league-leading total to 126. At his current pace, Erstad will finish the season with 261. The major-league record is 257, held by George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns and set in 1920.

Erstad has five hitting streaks of at least seven games this season. He has two or more hits in 40 games.
