ANGELS NOTEBOOK: MO HOPES HE'LL SOON BE ON FIRST.

Byline: Joe Haakensen

Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.
said there's a chance he'll return to first base before the end of the current homestand. Vaughn started at DH for the fifth game in a row Tuesday and is taping his sprained left ankle before games after being removed from the disabled list April 22.

``Every day it's getting better,'' Vaughn said. ``The way we've been taping the whole time, it's been a tight job. And I think the muscle's stronger than we felt it was.''

Manager Terry Collins put a pinch runner pinch runner

in for Vaughn in the seventh inning of Monday's game. Vaughn's spot in the lineup came up in the ninth inning with the game tied, but the Angels had Tim Unroe Timothy Brian Unroe (born October 7, 1970, in Round Lake Beach, Illinois) was a Major League Baseball first baseman. He is an alumnus of Lewis University.

Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 28th round of the 1992 MLB amateur draft, Unroe would make his Major League
     up instead. Unroe struck out.

One of the guys: He might be the 12th man on a 12-man pitching staff, but Scott Schoeneweis Scott David Schoeneweis [SHOW-en-WEISS] (born October 2, 1973, in Long Branch, New Jersey) is an American left-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. He plays for the New York Mets.  is showing he belongs.

Schoeneweis' outing Monday was critical in the Angels' 4-3, 11-inning victory over Toronto. He threw three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits (both singles) and didn't allow a Blue Jays baserunner to reach second base.

Schoeneweis, 25, was cut in spring training, then brought back to the club when Rich DeLucia Richard Anthony DeLucia (born October 7, 1964 in Reading, Pennsylvania), is a former professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1990-1999. Teams

    • Cincinnati Reds 1994

``I've said it all along, and I know it's cliche, but I'm just glad to be here,'' said Schoeneweis, who has a degree in history from Duke University. ``You can't trade the experience of being here for anything. Whatever role I have in the big leagues is fine with me. Just being here is great.''

In seven games, Schoeneweis is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA. But not counting his first game - in which he had the major-league-debut jitters jitters 'Butterflies' Psychology An episode of nervousness or anxiety that often precedes a public event; jitters is a type of performance anxiety which may affect actors in a stage production–stage fright or soloist musicians; it may respond to anxiolytics  (5 runs in one-third of an inning) - and Schoeneweis has allowed just one earned run earned run

Collins has indicated he might not be able to keep 12 pitchers much longer. With the starters going deeper into games, there isn't enough work to go around for all the relievers.

Schoeneweis might be the one to go, despite his success. But he says he is grateful for the opportunity.

``They took a big risk to put me in this situation,'' he said. ``I appreciate them having the confidence in me to do that. But I'd rather be a reliever in the big leagues than a starter at Triple-A, and that's what it comes down to.''
