Nobody was worried about the results, though, as the Angels took the field for an intrasquad game. The pitchers only worked an inning each. "As you move on in the spring, you'll probably be drawn more toward results than you are now," manager Mike Scioscia "Results right now are measured on how the ball is coming out of your hand, is your breaking stuff where it needs to be and where is your command." On offense, Casey Kotchman Casey John Kotchman (born February 22, 1983 in St. Petersburg, Florida) is a Major League Baseball first baseman for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He hit his first Major League home run on August 5 2005. In 47 games in 2005, Kotchman had 7 home runs and 22 runs batted in. had a two-run single, and Mike Napoli hit a home run to center. Just in case: Hector Carrasco, at 37, has emerged as the Angels' likely starting candidate if Jered Weaver is not ready to go at the beginning of the season. He didn't pitch well in his inning of work, giving up a hit and two walks. Expected to be a long man in the bullpen, Carrasco will get starts in spring training in order to have him stretched out in case he is needed to start. Injury updates: Scioscia said Weaver continues to make progress in his long-toss sessions. But there is no set date for Weaver to throw his first bullpen session. Bartolo Colon threw long toss from the 120- to 130-foot range, and Scioscia continues to speak positively about the right-hander's progress. Colon is even further away from a bullpen session than Weaver. Defensive struggles: Third baseman Chone Figgins failed to make a play to his left on a hard-hit ball by Maicer Izturis to open the intrasquad game. Figgins had a tough time at third base last season, committing 10 errors in 34 games (32 starts) there. "It wasn't an easy play," Scioscia said. "On the practice field, Figgy has been very impressive. It's just going to take some balls being hit to him and feeling good about making plays. " |
