ANGELS NOTEBOOK: LONG GAME TOOK A TOLL VS. YANKEES.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.

After that 4-1 win Friday over the Yankees, the trio had combined to allow only two earned runs in 42 2/3 innings for an ERA of 0.42.

In the following two games, they combined to give up seven runs (four earned) and seven walks in 2 1/3 innings.

``We had some wildness out of the pen,'' Scioscia said. ``That could be a residual affect of the guys pitching a lot. They've been so strong for us all year, and it caught up to us this weekend.''

Shields has been the workhorse of the bullpen, making 53 appearances, the most by an American League pitcher. He's thrown 65 1/3 innings.

--Impressive outing: The Angels could not have asked for more from pitcher Chris Bootcheck, who was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to start Sunday against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium.

Bootcheck needed only 79 pitches to get through six innings, allowing just five hits and one run - on a Jason Giambi homer.

Bootcheck said he probably could have pitched into the seventh inning, but Scioscia said Bootcheck had given them enough. Bootcheck's back was beginning to stiffen stiff·en

Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui, the Yankees' 3-4-5 hitters, went 1 for 9 against Bootcheck, the only hit a single by Rodriguez.

Over the past four seasons, the A's have the best record in the majors in August at 86-28. The Angels have the fourth-best August record over that time, 66-48.
