ANAHEIM -- For the second time in two years, Casey Kotchman Casey John Kotchman (born February 22, 1983 in St. Petersburg, Florida) is a Major League Baseball first baseman for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He hit his first Major League home run on August 5 2005. In 47 games in 2005, Kotchman had 7 home runs and 22 runs batted in.  is being linked to a mystery illness.

It is believed Kotchman had severe flu-like symptoms with vomiting and diarrhea, although nobody with the Angels would confirm that. Had the Angels forced a Game 4 today, Kotchman was not expected to be available.

Last season, Kotchman was limited to just 29 major-league games and three rehab games at Triple-A Salt Lake because of a virus that was discovered to be mononucleosis mononucleosis /mono·nu·cle·o·sis/ (-noo?kle-o´sis) excess of mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes) in the blood.

Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher Michael Dana Butcher (born May 10, 1965 in Davenport, Iowa) was a Relief Pitcher for the California Angels (1992-95) and is now the pitching coach of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  also was affected by an unknown virus Friday night that caused extreme fatigue and dehydration. The Angels would not confirm or deny if Kotchman's illness was the same as Butcher's. It still has not been determined what caused Butcher to become ill.

Butcher was taken off the Angels charter flight, which was headed back home after Friday night's 6-3 defeat to the Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent the night in a Boston hospital, flew home Saturday and was on the bench for Sunday's game.

"It was either a viral or a bacterial infection and it could have even been salmonella," Butcher said of his illness. "It could have been a number of things but I'll find out (from blood work)."

Guerrero quiet again: Another playoff series has gone by without Vladimir Guerrero making enough of an impact. Guerrero's career postseason batting average dropped to .183 (11 for 60) after going 2for10 against the Red Sox in this series.

"I think that at times when there is one guy you need to stop and you have pitchers that are on the money, you can do it," Scioscia said. "They pitched Vlad very tough this series. Some of the mistakes we made (pitching) were against some of their big guys and we paid a price for it. There weren't many mistakes made to Vlad and there weren't many made to (Garret Anderson) either."

Sox immune to running game: An aggressive running game -- with stolen bases and runners going first to third -- hasn't helped Scioscia's Angels against the Red Sox. Since becoming Angels manager in 2000, Scioscia's teams are 30-43 against the Red Sox, including a 0-6 mark against Boston in the playoffs.

Extra effort: Maybe practice does make perfect. The Red Sox were the only team that took batting practice since Friday in Boston, and their offense dominated Sunday.

Both teams arrived in Orange County early Saturday morning, and while the Red Sox held a short optional workout that afternoon, the Angels opted for rest. The Angels typically do not take batting practice before day games and did not do so before Sunday's noon start. The Red Sox were on the field for batting practice Sunday morning.

The Angels had just two fewer hits than Boston on Sunday, but just one of their eight hits came with a runner on base.
