exam which confirmed the diagnosis, initially hurt his arm Saturday in Detroit when he pitched the ninth inning and earned a save in the first game of a doubleheader. He hasn't pitched since.

Rodriguez said he felt something tighten in his arm on a pitch to Carlos Guillen, the last batter of the game, but then felt fine until the next morning.

``The next morning I feel it in the shower, it was tight,'' Rodriguez said, adding that his arm also was swollen.

Rodriguez speculated the strain might have been a result of him slipping on the mound during his delivery. The field was wet from rain earlier that day and the previous day.

``I don't want to use it as an excuse, but the mound was slippery, it was soaking wet,'' he said. ``Maybe I did something to create the pain right there.''

Rodriguez is listed as day-to-day, but with an off day Thursday, it's likely the Angels will rest Rodriguez until Friday as a precautionary measure. He will be examined by Angels team doctor Lewis Yocum on Thursday.

``We saw him in spring training and you could see the talent,'' Scioscia said. ``He was getting all his pitches over the plate and his velocity was where it should be. He's progressed quickly the last couple of months.''

Third baseman Dallas McPherson has played behind Santana in the minors and said he expects Santana to do well.

``He keeps the ball low, he has a good, live fastball and a good slider A block of material that holds the read/write head of a magnetic disk. See flying head. ,'' McPherson said. ``I don't think he'll be intimidated at all.''

Santana will ``probably,'' according to Scioscia, make a second start, though the club has options when to pitch him because of Thursday's off day.

Santana was chosen instead of Triple-A Salt Lake pitcher Chris Bootcheck in part because Bootcheck spent some time in the bullpen with the Angels and might not be stretched out enough.

``Santana's been very consistent the whole season, and he's been in the rotation the whole season,'' Scioscia said. ``We think he's ready for the opportunity. Bootcheck's getting reaccustomed to starting.''

Reserve outfielder Chris Prieto has been optioned to Salt Lake to make room on the roster for Santana.

--Finley sits again: Center fielder Steve Finley was not in the starting lineup for the third day in a row because of a strained groin.

``He's a day or two away from being back in the outfield,'' Scioscia said. ``We want to get him to 100 percent instead of DHing him, where he'd have to run the bases.''
