ANGELS NOTEBOOK: JEFFERIES ADDED FOR LEADOFF, LEFT-FIELD ROLE : GM BAVASI PULLS OFF ANOTHER WAIVER DEAL.

Byline: Joe Haakenson San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Tribune

The Angels failed to make a big move before the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline, but general manager Bill Bavasi William J. Bavasi (born December 27, 1957, Pasadena, California) is the current general manager and vice president of baseball operations for the Seattle Mariners. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB  and Co. have been busy since.

Friday, they acquired outfielder Gregg Jefferies
Gregory Scott Jefferies (born August 1 1967 in Burlingame, California) is a former infielder/outfielder in Major League Baseball who had a 14-year career from 1987 to 2000.

. After the season, the Phillies will get to pick from a list of eight ``fringe'' prospects to complete the deal.

Acquiring the 31-year-old Jefferies is the second deal the Angels have made after the non-waiver deadline. They also acquired pitcher Jeff Juden Jeffrey Daniel Juden (born January 19, 1971 in Salem, Massachusetts) is a former Major League Baseball player. He is 6'8" tall and weighs 265 lbs., and he batted and threw with his right hand  on Aug. 7.

``There wasn't any one move that put us over the hump,'' Bavasi said. ``But collectively, we've changed the approach of the club.''

Jefferies hit .295 with 22 doubles, eight homers and 48 RBI RBI

for the Phillies this season. He has a .292 career average, and is expected to bat leadoff and play left field for the Angels.

``He brings some experience,'' Bavasi said. ``If (manager) Terry (Collins) wants to use him in leadoff spot, he's done that. He just makes us deeper. He's a guy who you're able to point to and say `That's a guy who can hit and still run the bases good.' He's hit for a long time.''

Jefferies is making $6 million this season in the final year of his contract. The Angels will pay him $995,000 for the rest of the season and have an option for next season.

The Phillies initiated talks at the request of Jefferies' agent Seth Levinson when Jefferies learned the Phillies planned to give prospects more playing time in the final month of the season because the team is out of the race.

The acquisition means less playing time for Orlando Palmeiro Orlando Palmeiro (b. January 19, 1969, in Hoboken, New Jersey) is a Major League Baseball outfielder, currently with the Houston Astros, who went to the University of Miami. His better known cousin Rafael Palmeiro was also a Major League player.  and Reggie Williams Reggie Williams may refer to:
    • Reggie Williams (baseball player), a former outfielder in MLB during the 1990s.
    • Reggie Williams (baseball 1980s), a former outfielder in MLB during the 1980s.
    • Reggie Williams (wide receiver), a wide receiver in the NFL.
, two outfielders who have played well after being called up from the minors.

``They're still going to play some,'' Bavasi said. ``They've done a great job. What we don't want to do is fiddle with the 25-man roster that's done well. We're just trying to make us deeper down the stretch, and that's what it does.''

Jefferies will join the club today in Boston, at which time the Angels will have to clear a roster spot. They are expected to send out Williams, but he would rejoin the team Tuesday when rosters can be expanded.

More moves: With Ken Hill activated to start Friday's game, the Angels optioned pitcher Steve Sparks to Double-A Midland. However, Sparks will be back to start Wednesday's game in Cleveland after rosters expand.

Sparks is eligible for postseason play because he would be able to take the spot of a player on the disabled list. The Angels, by the way, have set a club record by using the disabled list 22 times this season.

Attention please: The Angels didn't handle the influx of media during the 1995 pennant race well. And it's a learning process again as they were hounded in New York New York, state, United States

``Everybody wants interviews,'' Collins said. ``There's always more focus, always something people want to bring up what you want to ignore. It's dealing with the things around the game. A lot of the guys thought there's a lot of media now. They haven't seen (anything) yet.''
