Gregg Jefferies
Gregory Scott Jefferies (born August 1 1967 in Burlingame, California) is a former infielder/outfielder in Major League Baseball who had a 14-year career from 1987 to 2000.
joined the Angels on Saturday at Fenway Park Coordinates:

But he also came with all the humility of a rookie.

``They're in first place,'' said Jefferies, who started in left field and batted leadoff Saturday. ``They don't need me. They got to first place by themselves. I'm not going to come in here and show them this or that. These guys are tremendous players. I'm very thankful to be here.''

Jefferies, 31, was acquired Friday from the Phillies in exchange for a player to be announced To be announced (TBA)

``I wasn't pushing for it, but I heard rumblings the last four days,'' Jefferies said of the trade. ``Obviously, I'm very excited. I loved the guys in Philly, but they wanted to move in a different direction. They're building with a youth movement, and that's OK.''

Jefferies was highly touted when he reached the majors at age 20 with the Mets in 1987, but he didn't quite live up to the hype.

``When I first broke in in '87, I was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle,'' he said. ``I can't live up to that. You're talking about one of the greatest players of all time. I've been in the majors 11 years and I'm 31. I'm proud of that.''

Jefferies' best season came in 1993 with the Cardinals when he hit .342 (third in the NL) with 16 homers and 83 RBI RBI

To make room for Jefferies on the roster, the Angels optioned outfielder Reggie Williams to Double-A Midland. Williams will rejoin the team Tuesday in Cleveland when rosters are expanded.

Orlando Palmeiro and Todd Greene also were affected by the acquisition of Jefferies because they had been getting time in left field.
