ANGELS NOTEBOOK: JEFFERIES, GLAUS LATEST TO FEEL PAIN.

Byline: Frank C. Girardot Frank C. Girardot (1961 in Detroit, Michigan) worked during the 1980s and 1990s as a copyboy, reporter and sportswriter for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, The Pasadena Star-News and The Los Angeles Daily News.

The Angels' homestand ended Wednesday pretty much as it began - with more people hurt.

Left fielder Gregg Jefferies
Gregory Scott Jefferies (born August 1 1967 in Burlingame, California) is a former infielder/outfielder in Major League Baseball who had a 14-year career from 1987 to 2000.

The San Francisco Bay Area, colloquially known as the Bay Area or The Bay
, offered an explanation for his trouble: ``Us California guys aren't real tough.''

Angels manager Terry Collins said a hamstring injury hamstring injury Sports medicine A muscle injury of biceps femoris, seen in sprinters and runners, when a contracted muscle meets a lengthening force, overpowering intrinsic muscle resiliency Management RICE, NSAIDs, gradual ↑ of pain-free activity–eg,  that put Jefferies on the disabled list late last season may have contributed to the ankle injury this season.

``I think it's at least part of the reason he ended up twisting his ankle,'' Collins said.

More aches: Also sitting out for a couple of days will be rookie third baseman third baseman

Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005). , who injured his left wrist.

Glaus, who went 0 for 4 against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday and is batting .100 during the homestand, ``may be tired,'' Collins said. ``He may be flat running out of gas. Hopefully, in a couple of days he'll get it back.''

No breathers: On Friday, the Angels begin their road trip with seven games against three teams, including the Texas Rangers.

First up, though, will be Baltimore and Tampa Bay. In Collins' mind, neither team figures to be a pushover push·o·ver

, as both clubs plan to use their best pitchers, he said.

``While we're going to Baltimore, they (Texas) will be playing Tampa,'' Collins said. ``At Baltimore, we're going to see (Scott) Erickson and Mike Mussina.

``That's why this trip is huge. This road trip is bigger than the last one, even though the number of games is fewer.''

Milestone: Going into Wednesday's game, Gary DiSarcina needed to score just one run to reach the 400-run mark for his career.

Days numbered? The Angels announced they have renewed their player-development contract with the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kernels, a Single-A team in the Midwest League.

Although the two teams will be linked though the 2000 season, the future for the Kernels as an Angels affiliate looks somewhat bleak.

The Cedar Rapids team is in desperate need of a new ballpark. A local sales-tax proposal failed at the ballot box in June. Had the tax passed, the team would have built a new $8 million stadium.

By the way, just one player on the Angels' current roster, pitcher Jason Dickson, came up through Cedar Rapids.
