ANGELS NOTEBOOK: IT PAYS TO STAY FOR ANDERSON.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  could have waited to become a free agent and incited a decent bidding war over his services.

But that's not Anderson's style.

``I never once thought about leaving. Ever,'' Anderson said Tuesday. ``I just couldn't see myself wearing another uniform.''

It's safe to say the Angels considered that a ghastly sight, too. The club locked up its franchise outfielder through at least 2008 Tuesday when they agreed to a four-year, $48 million deal, with a $14 million club option for 2009 that could make the deal worth $59 million.

Anderson received a $3 million signing bonus A signing bonus or sign-on bonus is a sum of money paid to a new employee by a company as an incentive to join that company. These are often given as a way of making a compensation package more attractive to the employee e.g. if the annual salary is lower than they desire.  and will receive $9 million in 2005, $10 million in '06, $11 million in '07 and $12 million in '08. The club holds a $14 million option for 2009, with a $3 million buyout.

Anderson, the club's MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. The past four seasons, he established himself as one of the premier outfielders in the game by averaging 30 home runs and 120 RBI RBI

Slowly, his price tag kept going up, and general manager Bill Stoneman
William Hambly Stoneman III (born April 7, 1944, in Oak Park, Illinois) is a consultant for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. From 1999 to October 15, 2007, he served as the general manager of the Angels.
began discussions as early as last June with Anderson's agent, Chris Arnold Christopher Paul Arnold (born November 6, 1947 in Long Beach, California) is a former infielder in Major League Baseball. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 1965 amateur draft, and played for the Giants from 1971 to 1976. , on an extension.

Talks bogged down some in the winter as Stoneman spent $146 million to sign free agents Vladimir Guerrero, Bartolo Colon, Kelvim Escobar and Jose Guillen, and Arnold expressed a desire to have Anderson's deal done by the end of spring training.

But Anderson suffered a bout of tendinitis in his right arm during spring training. Stoneman said the injury did ``not really'' impact negotiations.

But Anderson's deal got done quickly after he went 6-for-12 performance in the opening series at Seattle.

It was there that Stoneman, Anderson and owner Arte Moreno met and moved the deal closer to fruition.

    ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

, business never enters my mind.''

--Breathe again: Reliever Brendan Donnelly had the packing removed from his nose at an Arizona hospital and received clearance to begin light activity, clearing a significant hurdle in his comeback bid. He still is not likely to join the team this month.

--Injury update: Catcher Bengie Molina (left hamstring) made his season debut as expected Tuesday night, but a sore knee forced Guerrero into the designated hitter slot and Glaus' left hamstring strain sidelined him a second consecutive day.

Guerrero's soreness meant Salmon made his 12th consecutive home-opener start in right field.
