ANGELS NOTEBOOK: IT'LL BE ACES WILD FOR NEXT 2 WEEKS.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

SEATTLE - It never is easy facing the top two pitching staffs in the major leagues for a 13-game stretch. When your lineup is in a collective funk, that task only gets more difficult.

However, the Angels have little choice but to fight through their offensive inconsistencies against the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington.  and National League, respectively, in earned-run average and play their home games in parks tilted toward the pitcher.

``The caliber of pitching we're going to face doesn't get any better,'' center fielder Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  said. ``We're going to have to manufacture runs, no doubt about it.''

During this two-week stretch that began Monday, the Angels twice will face Dodgers right-hander Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
  • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
  • Kevin D. Brown (b.
, whose 2.00 ERA leads the major leagues. They'll also meet Hideo Nomo Hideo Nomo

, third in the NL in ERA (2.64), and twice will face Seattle's Jamie Moyer Jamie Moyer (born November 18, 1962 in Sellersville, Pennsylvania) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball, playing for the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. , whose 10 wins lead the majors and whose 2.99 ERA is third in the AL. All Moyer has done against the Angels this season is beat them twice, throwing 14 shutout innings.

Throw in Seattle's Gil Meche (9-3, 3.13) and the Dodgers' Kazuhisa Ishii (6-2, 2.97), in addition to both teams' stellar bullpens, and hits probably would be hard to come by for any team.

But the Angels also have been sputtering A popular method for adhering thin films onto a substrate.  rookie Jason Roach, who was making his major-league debut, and the Angels scored 10 runs in five games on their recently concluded homestand. The low point came in a one-hit shutout Sunday by the Mets' Steve Trachsel.

Hitting coach Mickey Hatcher said there are ways around a slumping team and hot pitching, and they include being more aggressive and waiting out a hot pitcher.

``When you face a good pitcher, you really have to focus on manufacturing runs,'' Hatcher said. ``(Manager) Mike (Scioscia) will probably be more aggressive running the offense. We've got to focus on going first to third. And it's getting these pitchers' pitch counts up. You might not score a lot of runs in the first three or four innings, but you'll see the pitch counts go up.''

--Rare day for full lineup: On Monday, the Angels had their opening-day lineup together for the first time since April 6. All the players were available last week, but situational matchups and the desire to give Erstad a day off prevented Scioscia from fielding their so-called regular lineup.

``Now you hope production will be where we need it to be,'' Scioscia said. ``The production hasn't been terrible, and we proved we had the depth to to support ourselves offensively.''
