ANGELS NOTEBOOK: INJURIES FORCE CHANGES BEFORE ROSTER CALL-UPS.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Bench help will arrive in a rush Wednesday or later, when the Angels can expand their roster beyond 25 and a handful of call-ups join the club.

But the Angels likely can't afford to wait until then to add help in the wake of injuries to designated hitters Jeff DaVanon Jeffrey Graham DaVanon (born December 8, 1973 in San Diego, California) is a Major League Baseball outfielder with the Oakland Athletics.

DaVanon came up through the Oakland Athletics system before being traded to the Anaheim Angels as a minor-leaguer in 1999.
 and Tim Salmon
Timothy James "Tim" Salmon (born August 24, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball right fielder/designated hitter who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise.
    .

DaVanon will miss at least five days and possibly a week, the Angels said Saturday, after spraining his right ankle running the bases Friday night.

Salmon has experienced more swelling in his left shoulder, which will require offseason surgery, and he will be re-evaluated today. He has not played since Monday, so the Angels could place him on the 15-day disabled list and issue an earlier call-up than expected for 43-year-old Andres Galarraga, who is hitting .337 at Triple-A Salt Lake. Salmon would be eligible for activation Sept. 8.

They are also hoping Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005).  will be available as soon as Wednesday and if he remains healthy, would likely become the everyday DH in September. The Angels are not planning to consummate a trade before Tuesday's deadline.

``Tim's been down, Jeff's been down, and we don't have a lot of bench depth,'' manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
said. ``We'll see what's available to us to re-establish depth and go from there.'' With Jose Molina again catching Bartolo Colon, the Angels started Bengie Molina Benjamin José ("Bengie" or "Ben") Molina (born July 20 1974 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) is the starting catcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. After being initially regarded as a "good glove, no hit" catcher, Molina has developed into one of the better  at designated hitter on Saturday. That position soon could be manned by Glaus, who is five games into his rehabilitation assignment at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif. .

Scioscia indicated Saturday that Glaus will finish his rehab with Rancho Cucamonga rather than see more advanced pitching at Triple-A Salt Lake.

In a best-case scenario, he will join the Angels in Boston at the start of their road trip on Tuesday.

DaVanon tweaked his ankle avoiding Chone Figgins' line drive in the second inning Friday and had X-rays, which were negative, and an MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
      2. MRI - Measurement Requirements and Interface.
, which confirmed a sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. . DaVanon, hitting .304, had an air cast on his ankle Saturday.

--Rotation juggle: September is the season for bruised egos, and that process will begin in earnest next week. John Lackey John Derran Lackey (born October 23, 1978, in Abilene, Texas) is a major league baseball starting pitcher from Abilene, Texas. He has played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim his entire career.  will start Tuesday against Boston and Bartolo Colon on Thursday. Scioscia must decide between Ramon Ortiz and Aaron Sele for Wednesday's start, with little work remaining for them beyond that.

With Jarrod Washburn penciled in to return next Saturday, the No. 5 slot will be necessary just four more times the rest of the season - Sept. 11, Sept. 16, Sept. 21 and Oct. 1. If the Angels and Oakland are still battling for a division title, that Oct. 1 start likely would be given to a top starter on short rest, and the Angels could go to short rest sooner than that.

``If there's less starts for guys, less at-bats for guys, that happens every September for teams in the hunt,'' Scioscia said. ``Every competitor will be disappointed if their role is diminished. As we're moving forward with these off days, it gives us an opportunity to consolidate the pitching side.''
