ANGELS NOTEBOOK: GUILLEN COMES CLEAN.Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer BALTIMORE - Angels reliever Brendan Donnelly was certain when he was caught June 14 with pine tar pine tar (p n)n. on his glove during a game against the Washington Nationals that former Angel malcontent Jose Guillen, now with the Nationals, was the one who tipped off Nationals manager Frank Robinson. A viscous or semisolid brown-to-black substance produced by distillation of pine wood and used as an expectorant and antiseptic. Guillen, who denied having anything to do with the incident at the time, has changed his story. In the latest issue of ESPN The Magazine, Guillen is quoted as saying: ``I knew Donnelly was using pine tar, and I knew he was using sandpaper sandpaper, abrasive originally made by gluing grains of sand to heavy paper sheets. Today sandpaper is made primarily with quartz, aluminum oxide, or silicon carbide grains, and is graded according to the size of the grains. It is used for smoothing and polishing, for removing old paint or varnish, and for otherwise preparing wood surfaces for refinishing or other treatment.. I was the one who told Frank, 'Check this guy's glove.' '' Donnelly, who received an eight-day suspension for the incident, didn't want to revisit the issue. ``I have no reaction,'' Donnelly said. ``I don't want to keep dragging that thing on.'' Regarding Guillen's comments, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said: ``If it happened that way, it happened that way. What's odd is Frank told everybody he saw it on video, so I don't know what the story is.'' --Anderson returns: Garret Anderson returned to the Angels' lineup Tuesday after missing the previous eight games because of patella pa·tel·lae (-t l![]() ) 1. tendinitis in his left knee and an irritated lower back, likely related to the sacroiliac sacroiliac /sa·cro·il·i·ac/ (-il´e-ak) pertaining to the sacrum and ilium, or to their articulation.sac·ro·il·i·ac (s k joint. The goal is for Anderson to become healthy enough to play left field, but he will, for the time being, be the designated hitter, Scioscia said. --Quinlan recalled: Robb Quinlan joined the team Tuesday, replacing reliever Greg Jones on the Angels' roster, and started at third base. --McPherson update: Now that two specialists have recommended Dallas McPherson have surgery to shave down a bone spur in his hip - Tennessee team doctor Thomas Byrd is the latest - the Angels' third baseman isn't expected back this season.
