ANGELS NOTEBOOK: GUERRERO PUT IN AS DH, NOT OUTFIELD.

Byline: BEN VILLA Staff Writer

ANAHEIM -- For the second straight game on this homestand, Vladimir Guerrero Vladimir Alvino Guerrero (born February 9, 1976 in Don Gregorio, Nizao, Dominican Republic), and known in his native Dominican Republic as Miquéas (Spanish for Micah), is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  started at designated hitter designated hitter

 and not in right field.

And before Tuesday's game, some were starting to suspect that Guerrero wasn't playing the field because he's become a defensive liability after making 11 errors this season.

But before Tuesday's game, Scioscia quickly discounted that.

``When he's healthy, Vlad is a presence in right field,'' Scioscia said. ``He has a great arm and he stop runners from going from first to third. But right now, he's banged up. His heal is a little sore after he slid at home plate in Oakland but we need his bat in the lineup.

``He's a lot like Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. . When Garret is healthy, he's our best left fielder and we want him out there. The same can be said for Vlad in right field.''

Great teammate: As Tim Salmon

is nearing the end of his career this week, he isn't the only one getting emotional about his retirement.

There aren't a lot of players on the current Angels squad who have played a lot of years with Salmon, but one who has is Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006). .

Erstad, who's in the final year of his contract -- and in all likelihood won't be asked back himself -- spoke on Tuesday about what Salmon has meant to the Angels.

``Talking about stuff like this is tough to put into words because Tim's meant so much to this franchise and to all of us,'' Erstad said. `` He's been the cornerstone of this franchise for a long time, and he was a great leader.

    ``He's not a big `rah rah

End of a great rookie year: After a great season that is sure to get him a few Rookie of the Year Rookie of the Year may refer to:

The former Long Beach State star will take an 11-2 record and 2.32 ERA into tonight's game against the Texas Rangers. After tonight's game, the Angels only have four games left.

``This has been a great season,'' Weaver said. ``Winning nine straight games, being compared to Whitey Ford. I can't paint a better picture than this.''
