ANGELS NOTEBOOK: GREEN GONE, FOR NOW.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

OAKLAND - Angels pitcher Steve Green For other people named Steve Green, see .

Steve Green (b. August 1, 1956 in Portland, Oregon) is a Contemporary Christian music singer notable for his vocal range (tenor 3) and flexible solo style.
probably couldn't have drawn a tougher assignment in his major-league debut, facing A's pitcher Tim Hudson Timothy Adam Hudson (born July 14, 1975 in Salem, Alabama[1] ) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the Atlanta Braves. Hudson began his major league career with the Oakland Athletics (1999-2004) and played his last two years of college .

But when Green left Saturday's game after six innings, he matched the former 20-game winner inning for inning.

Green gave up two runs and four hits in his six innings, including one run that scored when catcher Jorge Fabregas' attempted pickoff pick·off

Although players from both teams praised Green's performance, he was sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake after the game. Since Green was called up to make one start in place of Ismael Valdes

  • Ismael Valdéz (sic), Mexican baseballer
, the Angels could bring in another bench player until next weekend, when Valdes is scheduled to pitch.

Green packed his bags with a smile on his face, knowing he'll be back again when the need arises.

``He was outstanding,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``He had good sink on his ball, he moved it in and out and he changed speeds well. He needs to polish a few things, but he's going to pitch in the big leagues a long time.''

Green did walk six batters, but Scioscia said Green didn't lack control.

``The six walks are very deceptive,'' Scioscia said. ``He was right on the corners and moved the ball around. And the A's are a very patient team. On another given day, he might've walked no one.''

Green said his biggest worry going into the game was the weather. He was told if the game was rained out, he would have been sent back to Salt Lake and missed his start. But the sun came out and Green kept the Angels in the game.

``It's a lot different here (than Triple-A),'' he said. ``Guys are really patient. They lay off bad pitches. And not only do you have to throw strikes, but you have to throw quality strikes. Overall I'm happy. I got the first one out of my system. Maybe the next one will be a little different.''

``He didn't throw all out, but it was enough to know he'll be all right,'' Scioscia said.

If all goes well, Valdes likely will make his Angels debut Saturday in Anaheim against Seattle.

Jarrod Washburn is scheduled to pitch today for Triple-A Salt Lake against Oklahoma City. The club wants Washburn to make about 90 pitches, which would put him in position to return to the rotation, probably next Sunday against the Mariners.
