ANGELS NOTEBOOK: GLAUS DOES LITTLE THINGS TO HAVE A BIG DAY.

Byline: Joe Haakenson

Never mind that Troy Glaus Troy Edward Glaus (born August 3, 1976 in Tarzana, California) is a Major League Baseball player who plays third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005).  hit two home runs, added an RBI RBI

at Tempe Diablo Stadium Tempe Diablo Stadium is a baseball field located in Tempe, Arizona. It is the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the home field for night games of the Arizona League Tempe Angels. , manager Terry Collins says.

That was nice, but Collins is taking note of the little things Glaus is doing at the plate.

``The other day he drove the ball to right field with two strikes,'' Collins said. ``That's what I want to see. When he's behind in the count, he'll go the other way.''

Glaus has been working with hitting coach Rod Carew
Rodney Cline "Rod" Carew (born October 1, 1945), is a former Major League Baseball player for the Minnesota Twins and California Angels from 1967 to 1985.

He was born to a Panamanian mother on a train in the town of Gatun, which at that time was in the Panama Canal

David Michael Hollins (born May 25 1966 in Buffalo, New York) is a former third baseman in Major League Baseball. He played baseball at Orchard Park High School, where he graduated in 1984. He went to the University of South Carolina.
for the starting spot at third base. Collins says neither player has an edge at this point.

Hollins has been bothered off and on by a sore left hamstring all spring, and he's coming off an injury-plagued 1998.

``We've got to factor that in,'' Collins admitted, ``but we've also got to factor in - is Troy Glaus ready? He tore it up last spring, too.''

Glaus knows if he doesn't win the starting spot, he goes back to Triple-A. So it's all or nothing.

``I have to give them a reason to keep me,'' he said. ``Because they have the option to send me out. I have to eliminate all possibilities of that.''

With his big day Thursday, Glaus is hitting .429 (12 for 28) with two homers and a team-leading 14 RBI.

Mo better: Wednesday afternoon, Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.
told reporters he wasn't worried about his offense after a slow spring start. But he went to his room Wednesday night and did something about it.

``I looked at some tapes from last year,'' he said. ``I've got a good set-up now. It's about time It's About Time may refer to:

        Theater
        • It's About Time (musical), a 1951 Broadway production.
. Regardless of the workouts you do and the hitting in the offseason, it's a couple of weeks before you trust yourself at the plate.''

Thursday, Vaughn drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and also had a single in the Angels' 21-hit attack.

``He took batting practice with a purpose today, and he went into the game today with a purpose,'' Collins said. ``He hit four balls on the button.''

Ken Hill gave up one run and four hits in four innings Thursday while making 74 pitches. His surgically repaired right elbow is obviously fine, so now it's about getting back ``the edge.''

``The big thing for me is mentally getting the edge back, the killer instinct,'' Hill said. ``That's what I'm mainly trying to work on, getting a feel for everything and being aggressive.''
