ANGELS NOTEBOOK: FIGGINS IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Byline: Keven Chavez Staff Writer

SEATTLE - It was the sort of play that doesn't really exist on a scorecard and would never exist on SportsCenter.

Chone Figgins Desmond DeChone "Chone" Figgins (born January 22, 1978 in Leary, Georgia) is a Major League Baseball utility player for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Despite the unusual spelling of his first name, "Chone" is pronounced as "Shawn. , the Angels' little engine that always can, took off from first base and rounded second base without hesitation on Orlando Cabrera's single to short center field in Saturday's game against the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. Figgins came all the way home to score the first run in what turned out to be a five-run inning.

It was an explosion caused by a spark, and it's the sort of play that typifies Figgins' role at the top of the lineup.

``Creating havoc is the best part,'' said Figgins, who went 3 for 5 and scored three runs Saturday. ``You never know what it'll do to the defense.''

On Friday, Figgins stole his career-high 40th base in 50 attempts this season. It's the most for an Angel since Luis Polonia Luis Andrew Polonia Almonte (born October 12, 1963, in Santiago, Dominican Republic) was a Major League Baseball outfielder and designated hitter.

Signed by the Oakland Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1984, Polonia would make his Major League Baseball debut with the

--Injury update: The chances of Figgins returning to the bench in any capacity this season grew less likely after outfielder Tim Salmon was officially ruled out for this season and third baseman Dallas McPherson suffered a setback in his minor-league rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake.

McPherson, who is on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his hip, knee and groin, hit three home runs in his past three games with Salt Lake, including a two-run homer in Friday night's game against Tacoma. But Scioscia said the rookie's back stiffened up after the game and that McPherson will head back to Southern California this week for further examination by team doctors.

Salmon still is recovering from shoulder and knee surgeries performed last year and last month said he was shooting for a September return. But Scioscia on Saturday said Salmon still is dealing with irritation in his knee while hitting off a tee and will not return.

``He's not going to be an option this year,'' Scioscia said.
