Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

OAKLAND - Chone Figgins Desmond DeChone "Chone" Figgins (born January 22, 1978 in Leary, Georgia) is a Major League Baseball utility player for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Despite the unusual spelling of his first name, "Chone" is pronounced as "Shawn.  doesn't need to be in the lineup every day to know he's turned himself into a viable major-league player. He only has to read about Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans.  manager Buck Showalter William Nathaniel "Buck" Showalter (born May 23, 1956 in De Funiak Springs, Florida) is a former professional baseball player and manager. His most recent managerial position was with the Texas Rangers from 2002-2006.  calling him his favorite Angel or listen to the praise peers heap upon him as he scoots his way around the basepaths.

``The best compliment guys say is, `You can play,' '' Figgins said. ``They say, `You're doing a great job, keep it up.' When you hear it from other teams, it shows a lot of respect. It means more. Somehow, you've opened their eyes and they respect you. In return, it gives you more of an edge. Not that you change your game, but you realize you can play.''

It is a realization that gets more obvious every day. On Sunday, with Vladimir Guerrero Vladimir Alvino Guerrero (born February 9, 1976 in Don Gregorio, Nizao, Dominican Republic), and known in his native Dominican Republic as Miquéas (Spanish for Micah), is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  getting his first day off to rest an aching right knee and Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  (upper back stiffness) missing his fourth in a row, manager Mike Scioscia

Figgins, an infielder by trade, started his fourth consecutive game in center and has surpassed Jose Guillen and Jeff DaVanon as the top option there when Anderson is out. On Sunday, he singled and stole two bases, and the thought of him running prompted Oakland starter Rich Harden to throw to first and balk balk

Figgins has just 18 at-bats, but he's tied for second in the AL with six steals. After a solid audition in center field last season, Figgins hoped for an everyday role this year but has since overcomethat disappointment.

--Guerrero to play Tuesday: Scioscia says the tendinitis in Guerrero's right knee isn't chronic and that the right fielder will play Tuesday in Detroit after getting an extra day off today.

--A real splitter: Pitcher Kelvim Escobar applied some glue to the split nail on his right middle finger but said he figures he will have to get a false nail to make his next start. Scioscia said he might flip-flop Escobar and Ramon Ortiz on Friday and Saturday.
