ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ESCOBAR HAS TITLE TO SHOW FOR HIS EFFORT.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

OAKLAND - Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game  had a message for fellow Angels starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

``I told Escy, `Go out and deal. I'm good to pitch Sunday. But I'd rather pitch Tuesday,' '' Washburn said.

will take into account before making his rotation decision. What's certain is that Bartolo Colon will not start the opener on three days' rest.

That means Washburn or John Lackey will start Game 1, likely followed by Colon, who could start a Game 5 on three days' rest if necessary. Colon would be on full rest if an Angels-Boston series gets slotted for a Wednesday start.

Scioscia also did not rule out going with just three starters in the division series, which means Washburn or Lackey could be skipped altogether.

--Big Cat's final meow: Andres Galarraga will get the final start of his career today. The 43-year-old first baseman, who hit his 399th home run Friday, will go for 400 today as the Angels rest several regulars. After the postseason, he will head home to Venezuela. For good.

``This is it,'' said Galarraga, who twice defeated cancer and joined the Angels as a September call-up. ``I can't take it anymore. It's time to go home, spend more time with my family.''

If Galarraga doesn't hit No. 400 today, No. 399 will still rank as a sweet farewell. The Angels poured out of the dugout to greet him after his ninth-inning homer Friday.

``So one more to go, man,'' he said. ``Not too much chance to do it. When I saw everybody on top of the dugout, that made me feel more special. The support of those guys helped me a lot.''

--Appetite for innings: General manager Bill Stoneman signed free-agent pitchers Escobar and Colon to eat up innings and get the Angels to the playoffs. Both did just that, in identical fashion.

Escobar and Colon tied for the club lead with 208 1/3 innings. Escobar finished with a 5 1/3-inning, six-hit, four-run effort on three days' rest Saturday.
