ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ESCOBAR GUTTING IT OUT.

Byline: DOUG PADILLA Douglas ("Doug") Padilla (born October 4, 1956 in Oakland, California) is a former middle and long distance runner from the United States, who won the overall Grand Prix 1985 and the World Cup 5000m race in 1985.   Staff Writer

for all of Kelvim Escobar's starts this season, and so it will be again tonight that the right-hander will take pain into his outing against Toronto.

The very act of warming up will create a pinch in Escobar's right elbow that will stick with him until he finally puts ice on his arm following his outing. Lately the pain has been better, but it always is there.

Escobar's hope is that some downtime The time during which a computer is not functioning due to hardware, operating system or application program failure.  this offseason will make a difference. Until then, he's on board for however many starts the Angels might need this season.

Escobar said the pain reached its peak around the All-Star break, and a subsequent stint on the disabled list did wonders to get him some relief. He has been able to manage the pain lately, and it shows.

Escobar had one of his better starts of the season the last time out, allowing no runs on two hits in eight innings in a victory over Detroit. One start before that, he struck out ninebatters and gave up just two runs but lost to Seattle.

Escobar was anticipating a big season while in spring training, but is just 10-12. His 3.61 ERA, though, suggests things could have been better with some run support or better luck.

``I'm very happy,'' said Escobar, who signed a three-year, $28.5 million contract extension at the end of May. ``The only thing that I'm not happy about is my record. My record doesn't show how well I pitched all year. I don't think I can control that, you know? I think I have thrown the ball good enough to have a way better record than I have.''
