ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ERSTAD RETURNS TO DL.

Byline: DOUG PADILLA Douglas ("Doug") Padilla (born October 4, 1956 in Oakland, California) is a former middle and long distance runner from the United States, who won the overall Grand Prix 1985 and the World Cup 5000m race in 1985.  Staff Writer

PHOENIX -- As expected, Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  went on the disabled list Friday with problems in his right ankle and Tommy Murphy Tommy Murphy can refer to:

  • Tommy Murphy (baseball player)
was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Erstad tried to run during early batting practice but had to stop because of intense pain.

It is the second time Erstad has gone on the disabled list with the problem which first appeared midway through spring training. He was out all of May and almost half of June with the same problem.

``I couldn't even try to fool myself,'' Erstad said. ``It goes back to what I said before: are you hurting the team or helping the team? They gave me a few days but I can't keep hurting the team. I can't help.''

While Erstad's ankle been diagnosed with everything from bone spurs to a bone bruise and even ligament and tendon damage, Erstad said the real trouble is coming from an irritated ankle joint ankle joint

Manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
said ``they did find some arthritis down there,'' but other tests were inconclusive.

``He's had almost six weeks to get it to a certain point and it didn't respond,'' Scioscia said.

``We're not giving up on his being able to contribute this year. But right now it's almost like a black hole. We just have to get this thing to calm down and see where he is then try to work him back up and see if he can play.''

Erstad said he hadn't had time to ponder the big picture. If he can't play again this season, he has likely already played his last game in an Angels' uniform. There is also the possibility the injury could threaten his career.

Meeting of the minds: Scioscia said Thursday's Angels summit was positive and virtually everything with the major-league team was discussed. The meeting was between Scioscia, owner Arte Moreno, general manager Bill Stoneman
William Hambly Stoneman III (born April 7, 1944, in Oak Park, Illinois) is a consultant for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. From 1999 to October 15, 2007, he served as the general manager of the Angels.

While trades were discussed, the Angels don't seem ready to go out and immediately complete a deal.

``We never think, well, the calvary is going to come over the hill and you'll get an influx of a player here and a player there to fill what is (needed),'' Scioscia said.

On the farm: Jered Weaver Jered David Weaver (born October 4, 1982 in Northridge, California), is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Jered attended college at Long Beach State University where he was the 2004 College Baseball's Golden Spikes Award winner.
was dominating in his second start with Salt Lake after returning from a stint with the Angels. The right-hander struck out a club-record 14 batters during a two-hit shutout of visiting Sacramento.

Weaver had a perfect game for five innings and carried a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings. He had just one walk and threw 105 pitches.
